Webb telescope spots star spewing bright supersonic jets

Posted by in category: space

The space observatory has observed a dynamic environment around a young protostar as it accumulates mass on its path to becoming a Sun-like celestial body.

Since its launch, the advanced James Webb Space Telescope.

One example is star-forming regions, often challenging to observe due to their location within densely populated clouds of gas and dust.

US state seeks to outlaw the use of armed robots

Posted by in categories: drones, law enforcement, military, robotics/AI

The US military and its contractors would be exempt.

Robots that are autonomous or semi-autonomous and carry weapons or offensive capabilities are often called armed robots. These robots can be employed in a variety of settings, including the military, law enforcement, industry, and security.

Today, many armed robots are controlled remotely by human operators who can keep a safe distance between themselves and the devices. This is particularly prevalent with military drones, as the operators control the aircraft and its weaponry from a distance, making the machines even more dangerous to civilians.

Earth’s health is depleting on six of nine parameters

Posted by in categories: health, space

Human intervention right now holds the key.

How do we assess the health of our planet? In 2009, a group of 28 scientists wanted a definite answer to this question. So, they outlined nine planetary boundaries, which are critical for Earth’s stability.

A reassessment in 2023 says that six of these nine planetary boundaries have been transgressed, suggesting that Earth is “well outside of the safe operating space for humanity.”

Scientists kill brain cancer with quantum therapy in a first

Posted by in categories: neuroscience, quantum physics

Scientists propose a spray that will make the most aggressive brain cancer tumors commit suicide. This spray contains bio-nanoantennae, special molecules that can alter cells at the quantum level.

Scientists at the University of Nottingham have devised a unique spray treatment method to cure glioblastoma, a highly aggressive brain cancer that annually kills over 10,000 people in the US.

Underwater abode for deep-sea living open to public by 2027

Posted by in categories: habitats, innovation

The Sentinel system facilitates extended stays underwater, allowing scientists to reside at depths of up to 200 meters for as long as 28 days.

In a bold initiative, DEEP, a leading research organization, has announced plans to construct an underwater habitat open to the public by 2027. Named Sentinel, this modular subsea abode aims to revolutionize underwater living, research, and observation by providing scientists unprecedented access to the depths of the ocean.

The Sentinel system is designed to facilitate extended stays underwater, allowing scientists to reside at depths of up to 200 meters for as long as 28 days. This innovative habitat offers a unique opportunity for researchers to study… More.

Single-blade wind turbine works at wind speeds of 157 mph

Posted by in categories: energy, sustainability

TouchWind.

For years, the wind energy industry has adopted the three-blade model for its turbines. As the world looks for cleaner sources of energy, the turbines are getting larger and are also going deeper into the seas, where winds blow stronger.

Nonclassical Mechanism of Metal-Enhanced Photoluminescence of Quantum Dots

Posted by in categories: nanotechnology, quantum physics

Metal-enhanced photoluminescence is able to provide a robust signal even from a single emitter and is promising in applications in biosensors and optoelectronic devices. However, its realization with semiconductor nanocrystals (e.g., quantum dots, QDs) is not always straightforward due to the hidden and not fully described interactions between plasmonic nanoparticles and an emitter. Here, we demonstrate nonclassical enhancement (i.e., not a conventional electromagnetic mechanism) of the QD photoluminescence at nonplasmonic conditions and correlate it with the charge exchange processes in the system, particularly with high efficiency of the hot-hole generation in gold nanoparticles and the possibility of their transfer to QDs.
