The lithium-ion battery is the beating heart of the modern world. It powers eight billion mobile phones, hundreds of millions of laptops and rapidly growing fleets of electric cars and energy-storage banks. But there’s a new contender breaking into the battery market.

Batteries based on sodium promise to be cheaper, safer and much more environmentally friendly than lithium-ion cells. And this year could mark the start of the sodium era.

In April, Chinese firm CATL — the world’s largest battery producer — announced that it will start mass-producing sodium-ion batteries before the end of 2026. CATL, which is headquartered in Ningde, added that it had signed deals to sell the batteries both to a car manufacturer and to a provider of energy-storage stations for electricity grids.

Nearly 300 GitHub repos pose as legit software to push malware

A threat actor has published hundreds of fake GitHub repositories impersonating legitimate software and security projects to distribute infostealer malware.

The campaign drew traffic from search results for security products, cryptocurrency services, financial tools, developer utilities, secure email providers, macOS utilities, and gaming software.

The malware collects data from more than 19 web browsers, steals info from 32 cryptocurrency wallets, and exfiltrates sensitive details from messaging and social media apps.

DNA origami turns secret messages into nano–Morse code that acts as multiplayer molecular encryption

Mathematics has always been at the core of securing information. From online banking to government communications, modern society relies on cryptography, in which complex mathematical algorithms transform readable information into an unreadable form to keep it secure. But as computing power grows and quantum technology advances, these mathematical safeguards are increasingly vulnerable to being broken. That’s where biology stepped in.

Choosing DNA as their information protector, researchers from China developed a multilayer encryption device that takes advantage of the double-helix molecule’s programmable nature to create an origami structure that can store information with high security.

This new system used tiny, custom-built rectangular structures made of DNA, in which researchers stored the message as dots and dashes, creating a nanoscale version of Morse code. To hide the message further, they turned the flat DNA origami surfaces into tubes, physically blocking the patterns from being read or imaged. With the help of a matching unlocking key, the recipient can trigger a reaction that unrolls the DNA back to its flat form, allowing them to read and verify the message.

Ransomware Negotiator Gets 70 Months in Prison for Aiding BlackCat Attacks

A 41-year-old former ransomware negotiator has been sentenced to nearly six years (i.e., 70 months) in prison in the U.S. for their role in conspiring with the now-defunct BlackCat ransomware operators to extort multiple victims and working with two other cybersecurity professionals to target additional victims in 2023.

In a sentencing memorandum, federal prosecutors described Martino as a “double agent working to maximize the harm to his clients and the financial gain to cybercriminals who paid him a part of the ransom.”

Angelo Martino, 41, of Land O’Lakes, Florida, pleaded guilty to one-count information charging him with conspiring to interfere with interstate commerce through extortion back in April. The defendant worked as a negotiator on behalf of five different ransomware victims, while providing BlackCat attackers with confidential information regarding their negotiating position and strategy without their knowledge or permission.

Beyond Agentic AI: The Emergence Of Cognitive AI Ecosystems

In the next decade, AI will likely undergo more significant changes than only becoming more independent; it will also grow more cognitive. AI systems will act as interconnected ecosystems that are capable of contextual awareness, cooperative reasoning, ongoing learning, and adaptive decision-making in almost every facet of society, rather than isolated applications.

Hundreds of thousands of AI agents working continuously alongside human employees may be employed by organizations as digital workforces. A customized constellation of AI advisers, researchers, legal assistants, financial analysts, engineers, and cybersecurity specialists working around the clock could be present for every knowledge worker. This shift signifies the emergence of an entirely new digital labor force in addition to automation.

Hybrid AI model cuts financial forecasting error across stocks and crypto

A hybrid artificial intelligence model that combines two well-established deep learning techniques has improved the accuracy of financial market forecasts across major stock indices and so-called cryptocurrency, according to work in the International Journal of Reasoning-based Intelligent Systems.

The researchers designed the model, CLSTM-HN, to address a long-standing problem in financial forecasting: balancing the detection of short-term market movements with the recognition of longer-term trends. The researchers tested the system on publicly available data and achieved a forecasting error 15% to 20% lower than that of conventional long-short-term memory (LSTM) models. They also saw an improvement in the accuracy of predicting whether prices would rise or fall by 10% to 14%.

Financial markets are difficult to predict because prices are volatile, noisy and subject to sudden structural shifts. Traditional statistical approaches often rely on assumptions about market behavior that break down during periods of instability.

Fake Paysafe, Skrill SDKs on NPM and PyPi steal credentials

Malicious packages on the Node Package Manager (npm) and the Python Package Index (PyPI) delivered stealer malware to developers and users of Paysafe, Skrill, and Neteller payment applications.

The threat actor published at least 17 malicious packages simultaneously, each tasked to exfiltrate credentials and access tokens to a command-and-control server hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

All three payment platforms are popular, with Paysafe being mostly used by e-commerce sites and online marketplaces, gaming platforms, travel businesses, and financial services or software-as-a-service (SaaS) providers.
