Google co-founder Sergey Brin has taken a rather similar stance as Tesla CEO Elon Musk on artificial intelligence, emphasizing AI dangers in a recent investor communication. According to the Russian-born billionaire, the present day is an era of possibilities, but it is also a time when responsibility has to be practiced, particularly when it comes to emerging technologies.

“We’re in an era of great inspiration and possibility, but with this opportunity comes the need for tremendous thoughtfulness and responsibility as technology is deeply and irrevocably interwoven into our societies,” he wrote.

Brin’s statements were outlined in Alphabet’s recent Founders’ Letter, where the 44-year-old billionaire described how Google is utilizing bleeding-edge technology for its ventures. While AI as a discipline is still an emerging field, Brin noted that there are already a lot of everyday applications for the technology. Among these are the algorithms utilized by Waymo’s self-driving cars, the smart cooling units of Google’s data centers, and of course, Google Translate and YouTube’s automatic captions.

Yet, it is a small percentage of its workforce.

Amazon.com Inc., one of the largest technology companies in the world with presence in ecommerce, advertising, video streaming and cloud computing, has announced that it will be laying off 18,000 workers as the company copes with the economic downturn in the future, The Wall Street Journal.

Technology companies in the U.S. began laying off people as early as June last year, when Tesla began reducing its staff strength as CEO Elon Musk had a “super bad feeling” about the economy. As the year drew to a close, software-focused companies also announced job cuts, with Meta leading the list with as many as 11,000 employees facing the axe.

What is the Drake Equation? We are talking about The Odds of ALIEN LIFE.
Is there life out there in the Universe?
How are the chances to find Extraterrestrial life?

We don’t know the answers to a lot of questions, for example:
How many alien societies exist, and are detectable?
Even though we don’t know how to answer such a question, we can at least try to figure it out with a little help from our beloved…Math.
First, we have to have a pretty good idea about how the universe works, and of course about the star and planetary formation, as well as conditions for life as we know it. This means we have to study and collect a lot of data. Luckily for us, we – humans — aren’t so bad. Physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology and all-natural sciences offer us the hints for the mathematical set of parameters that will give us an equation to calculate the number of alien societies that exist and are detectable.
Second, one has to sit down and think about which parameters should appear in the equation, and which not.
Do you think it’s difficult? I think so.
But luckily for us, in 1961 scientists Drake came up with a famous equation, that estimated the number of transmitting societies in the Milky Way Galaxy…

ChatGPT integration with Bing’s search engine.

Microsoft’s Bing search engine might soon become more attuned to users’ needs and return results in a more human-like fashion. According to The Information, the tech giant is planning to incorporate the OpenAI software powering ChatGPT into Bing in hopes that it can help the company catch up to (or maybe even outshine) Google. Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI back in 2019, and more recent reports said it’s in talks with the Elon Musk-founded startup for a follow-up investment. Now, The Information is reporting that Microsoft’s initial investment included an agreement to incorporate some aspects of GPT into Bing.

OpenAI developed GPT as a language model that uses deep learning to generate human-like text responses. Late last year, it launched a program called ChatGPT that quickly skyrocketed in popularity due to its ability to return responses that seem like they were written by actual people. Educators raised concerns that it could easily be used for cheating, since those who tried the tool said they would’ve given its responses a good grade if a student claimed to have written them. ChatGPT is free for now, but OpenAI intends to charge for its use in the future.

What GPT integration would mean for Bing isn’t clear at this point. It doesn’t have the capability to scrape the internet for results, so Microsoft will still use its own search engine technology. However, The Information said it could help Bing present results to users in a friendlier way. A source “familiar with Bing’s systems” told the publication that Microsoft could use the technology to present search results as full sentence answers with the source for the information. If Bing suggests related queries to the original one, GPT could explain their relevance in a meaningful manner. The technology could help Bing suggest better keywords or key phrases to users, as well.

The kind of rapid technological advancement that humanity has seen in the last 100 years has been the story of the century. Thanks to this rapid advancement, the idea that humanity is approaching a “singularity” has moved from the realm of science fiction to a concern for serious scientific debate. Some people believe that AI will take over the world soon. In fact, some experts predict that this technological singularity will happen within the next 30 years. The idea that artificial intelligence will take over the world and humans will no longer be in charge is scary and opens up the stage for serious debate. Today we are on the brink of a technologically activated change that will fundamentally disrupt every human affair and the entire human ecosystem, as it exists today. SO what is technological singularity? And how will it change our very own reality? Let’s understand it.
