Tesla plans to license Autopilot and Full Self-Driving to other OEMs

Tesla is planning to license Autopilot and even its Full Self-Driving suite to other companies, CEO Elon Musk said yesterday in a Tweet.

The announcement comes after Tesla recently struck a deal with Ford to open its Supercharging network to the automaker, which also plans to adopt Tesla’s charging connector that will eliminate the need for an adapter.

Musk, in a Tweet responding to an article regarding GM CEO Mary Barra’s comments regarding Tesla’s prowess in EVs, said that the company “aspires to be as helpful as possible to other car companies,” mentioning the move it made several years ago that made its patents freely available to other companies.

Max Tegmark interview: Six months to save humanity from AI? | DW Business Special

A leading expert in artificial intelligence warns that the race to develop more sophisticated models is outpacing our ability to regulate the technology. Critics say his warnings overhype the dangers of new AI models like GPT. But MIT professor Max Tegmark says private companies risk leading the world into dangerous territory without guardrails on their work. His Institute of Life issued a letter signed by tech luminaries like Elon Musk warning Silicon Valley to immediately stop work on AI for six months to unite on a safe way forward. Without that, Tegmark says, the consequences could be devastating for humanity.

In confirming her resignation, Ella Irwin wrote, “So one or two people noticed that I left Twitter yesterday. I know there’s been a lot of speculation regarding what happened. Was I fired? Did I quit?”

She added, “I did resign but this has been a once in a lifetime experience and I’m so thankful to have worked with this amazing team of passionate, creative and hardworking people. Will be cheering you all and Twitter as you go!”

Sacrificing Sleep For Productivity Gave ‘Brain Pain,’ Says Elon Musk

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who last year described himself as “fairly nocturnal,” is known for his history of working through the night and even sleeping beneath his desk to meet deadlines. Recently, however, he revealed that he is endeavoring to secure at least six hours of sleep every night.

In an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, Musk said, “I’ve tried to sleep less, but even though I’m awake more hours, I get less done. And the brain pain level is bad if I get less than six hours of sleep per night.”

Musk said he often works seven days per week and only takes “two or three” truly workless vacation days yearly. However, he said he doesn’t expect his employees to model that behavior.

Elon Musk Says China Is Ahead in a Key Race

The moment is badly chosen, but with Elon Musk the unexpected is the rule.

The serial entrepreneur arrived in China on May 30, according to Reuters, whose journalists spotted his private jet at Beijing airport. This surprise visit by the CEO of electric vehicle producer Tesla, founder of SpaceX and owner of Twitter, comes at a time of renewed tensions between China and the U.S., which raise fears of a potential confrontation between the two leading world powers.

Musk and his empire symbolize, according to experts, the intricacy of the two largest world economies, which are interdependent. The U.S. and China are Tesla’s two biggest markets and the regions where the world leader in electric vehicles manufactures the vast majority of its cars.

Neuralink says it has the FDA’s OK to start clinical trials

In December 2022, founder Elon Musk gave an update on his other, other company, the brain implant startup Neuralink. As early as 2020, the company had been saying it was close to starting clinical trials of the implants, but the December update suggested those were still six months away. This time, it seems that the company was correct, as it now claims that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given its approval for the start of human testing.

Neuralink is not ready to start recruiting test subjects, and there are no details about what the trials will entail. Searching the ClinicalTrials.gov database for “Neuralink” also turns up nothing. Typically, the initial trials are small and focused entirely on safety rather than effectiveness. Given that Neuralink is developing both brain implants and a surgical robot to do the implanting, there will be a lot that needs testing.

It’s likely that these will focus on the implants first, given that other implants have already been tested in humans, whereas an equivalent surgical robot has not.
