Meta is working on an AI ‘builder bot’ for the metaverse

Posted by in category: robotics/AI

Mark Zuckerberg may still be explaining exactly what the metaverse is, but the Meta CEO just showed off another technology he says will be crucial to the company’s vision of creating immersive environments. Meta’s AI researchers are working on a voice-powered bot that allows users to change their virtual surroundings with voice commands.

Zuckerberg demoed an early version of the concept, called Builder Bot, at a virtual event detailing the company’s latest AI research.

“It enables you to describe a world and then it will generate aspects of that world for you,” Zuckerberg said. In his demo, he and another Meta employee used voice commands to create a very basic beach scene with a picnic table, clouds, and, yes, Zuckerberg’s signature hydrofoil. They also added some sound effects of seagulls and ocean waves.

Not anymore! Scientists have discovered a bacterium that is bigger than a fruit fly, according to a report by Science published on Wednesday.

The researchers also report being amazed by the bacterium’s complexity.

Elon Musk suggests SpaceX can protect the ISS, following a Russian space chief’s claims it could crash into Earth

Posted by in categories: Elon Musk, space travel

In Rogozin’s series of tweets, he claimed the sanctions could have severe consequences for the ISS and “destroy” international co-operation related to the ISS.

Another of his tweets said: “There is also the option of dropping a 500-ton structure to India and China. Do you want to threaten them with such a prospect? The ISS does not fly over Russia, so all the risks are yours. Are you ready for them?”

Musk appeared to confirm that SpaceX would get involved, should the ISS fall out of orbit. A Twitter user asked if that’s what the tech mogul really meant, to which Musk simply replied: “Yes.”

Topic: James Hughes — The Future of Work (Future Day Talk) Time: Mar 1, 2022 08:00 AM Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81306102463?pwd=eDBldno3cUdZZGcxVHoxNEJ1RkgrUT09 Meeting ID: 813 0610 2,463 Passcode: Q6VzpF

As part of the annual Future Day celebration, James Hughes will join us that may concern you — ‘The Future of Work’. Zoom details coming soon!

Abstract: The pandemic has launched a debate about the future of work around the world. Those who can work remotely have often found they prefer remote or flexible, hybrid options. The Great Resignation has put upward pressure on wages and benefits in the service sector, encouraging the implementation of automation. Climate change mitigation is encouraging a shift towards “green jobs.” Rapid changes in the labor market have made the payoffs of higher education uncertain for young people, while many societies are entering an old-age dependency crisis with too few workers paying taxes for growing numbers of pensioners. Before the pandemic proposals for universal basic income (UBI) were seen as necessary adaptations to imminent technological unemployment, and the during the pandemic many countries provided temporary UBI to keep people safe. We are now poised for a global discussion about whether we need to work at all, and what kinds of jobs are desirable.

Elon Musk pushes to build 6.2-mile underground tunnel for Tesla vehicles to ferry passengers in traffic-clogged North Miami Beach

Posted by in categories: Elon Musk, sustainability, transportation

Elon Musk is pushing to build a massive 6.2-mile underground tunnel to ferry Tesla vehicles and their passengers in the traffic-clogged area of North Miami Beach.

Musk’s Boring Company are currently considering the Hard Rock Stadium and Florida International University’s Biscayne campus as hosts for the proposed transit tunnel, which will run underneath Miami-Dade, according to the Miami Herald.

The tunnel, which would initially see Tesla vehicles carrying as many as 7,500 passengers per hour with an eventualy goal of as many as 15,000 per hour, would have drivers passing underneath State Road 826 East from Northwest 2nd Avenue to Northeast 35th Avenue.

Seismic study reveals key reason why Patagonia is rising as glaciers melt

Posted by in category: futurism

The icefields that stretch for hundreds of miles atop the Andes mountain range in Chile and Argentina are melting at some of the fastest rates on the planet. The ground that was beneath this ice is also shifting and rising as these glaciers disappear. Geologists have discovered a link between recent ice mass loss, rapid rock uplift and a gap between tectonic plates that underlie Patagonia.

Scientists at Washington University in St. Louis, led by seismologist Douglas Wiens, the Robert S. Brookings Distinguished Professor in Arts & Sciences, recently completed one of the first seismic studies of the Patagonian Andes. In a new publication in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, they describe and map out local subsurface dynamics.

“Variations in the size of glaciers, as they grow and shrink, combined with the mantle structure that we’ve imaged in this study are driving rapid and spatially variable uplift in this region,” said Hannah Mark, a former Steve Fossett postdoctoral fellow in earth and planetary sciences at Washington University, the first author of the publication. Mark is now a postdoctoral investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Garry Kasparov Speaks To Rajdeep Sardesai On Russia-Ukraine War, Vladimir Putin & More | Exclusive

Posted by in categories: business, security, transportation

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been preparing for the war in Ukraine in plain sight, said Russian Chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov. He added that the Russian invasion of Ukraine could have been avoided had Western countries listened to what Vladimir Putin had been saying.
In an exclusive interview with India Today, Kasparov said, “Back in 2007 at the Munich Security Conference, he [Putin] had talked about spheres of influence. He wanted the world to be divided in the fashion of the past where big countries dictated to smaller countries how to behave.
“Putin has been preparing for the war in Ukraine in plain sight. He bought his Pacific fleet to the Black Sea. Russian forces have now surrounded Ukraine from all sides.“
The 58-year-old former World Chess Champion, however, said that what is happening in Ukraine now is a deviation from Russia’s plans.
“Russia failed to take over Kyiv in two or three days as planned. The heroic defence by Ukrainians has harmed Putin’s image as an invincible leader,” Kasparov said.
