Decreased lifespan in female “Munchkin” actors from the cast of the 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz does not support the hypothesis linking hypopituitary dwarfism to longevity

Posted by in categories: genetics, life extension

In laboratory mice, pituitary dwarfism caused by genetic reduction or elimination of the activity of growth hormone (GH) significantly extends lifespan. The effects of congenital pituitary dwarfism on human longevity are not well documented. To analyse the effects of untreated pituitary dwarfism on human lifespan, the longevity of a diverse group of widely known little people, the 124 adults who played “Munchkins” in the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz was investigated. Survival of “Munchkin” actors with those of controls defined as cast members of The Wizard of Oz and those of other contemporary Academy Award winning Hollywood movies was compared. According to the Kaplan–Meier survival curves, survival of female and male “Munchkin” actors was shorter than cast controls and Hollywood controls of respective sexes.

The Real Origins of Ancient Israel | Lester L. Grabbe PhD

Posted by in category: futurism

The real origins of Ancient Israel in history is a fascinating area of research. In this interview we discuss ancient Canaan being ruled by Egypt and the conflicts between Philistine peoples and Israel. The God El and Yahweh from Canaan to Israel and its polytheistic origins. We also get into creation accounts prior to Genesis in the ancient Babylonian sources like the Enuma Elish and where Leviathan comes from.

Lester L. Grabbe is a retired American scholar and Emeritus Professor of Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism at the University of Hull, England.

Lab-grown blood cells transfused into people

Posted by in category: biotech/medical

The world’s first clinical trial of laboratory grown red blood cells transfused into humans has begun at the University of Bristol, UK.

The manufactured blood cells were grown from stem cells from donors. The red cells were then transfused into volunteers, as part of an NHS clinical trial called RESTORE (REcovery and survival of STem cell Originated REd cells).

If proved to be safe and effective, this could revolutionise treatments for people with blood disorders such as sickle cell and rare blood types. It can be difficult to find enough well-matched donated blood for some people with these disorders.

Global AI Ethics Agreement Commits Universities to Human-Centered AI

Posted by in categories: ethics, robotics/AI

A new global agreement has been established by eight worldwide universities to commit to the development of human-centered approaches to artificial intelligence (AI). The newest university to join the agreement, which could impact people all across the globe, was the University of Florida (UF).

The Global University Summit was held back on October 27 at Notre Dame University. Joseph Glover, UF provost and senior vice president of academic affairs, signed The Rome Call for AI Ethics on behalf of the University of Florida. He also served as a panelist for the two-day summit, which was attended by 36 universities from around the world.

Kyle Meredith with… Mark Rylance and Trudie Styler

Posted by in categories: Elon Musk, robotics/AI, singularity

Mark Rylance & Trudie Styler on AI, Singularity, Othering, Empathy, and Evolution.

Actor Mark Rylance and director/activist Trudie Styler sit down with Kyle Meredith to talk about Spark Hunter, a new audio drama about the world’s most advanced AI having dinner with her maker over a philosophical discussion to determine if she represents a new hope for the world, or its destruction. The two discuss how the Dalai Lama brought them together, what it means to have standing inside the laws of nature, and the points of othering, racism, empathy, and evolution that the spy-drama digs into. Rylance, who also starred in Ready Player One and Don’t Look Up, and Styler also consider if we’ll ever see singularity or if robots should even aspire to be more human, especially considering folks like Elon Musk and his actions.

The Sentience Singularity : The Evolutionary Trendline of Intelligence

Posted by in categories: particle physics, singularity

Intelligence has evolved on an accelerating, exponential trendline to create a Sentience Singularity in the past, just like the progress of technology that followed it. The two are closely related, and form the first principles of futurism, and any attempt to make long-term predictions.

ATOM Chapter 1 : Prologue : https://atom.singularity2050.com/1-prologue.html.
