NVIDIA Canvas App: AI-Powered Painting

Posted by in categories: economics, robotics/AI

With all the controversy surrounding AI art, I’m surprised that NVIDIA is so rarely discussed. Unlike other AI art technologies, NVIDIA facilitates drawing landscapes in an interactive fashion. You sketch out rough blobs and then the AI converts your shapes into rocks, grasses, dirt, trees, and other selectable material types. I think that this kind of tool deserves much more attention since it empowers human artists to create with AI as a partner and gives us more creative control over the final result. Sure, NVIDIA itself is somewhat limited, but the principle of it is very compelling and I can easily envision people developing lots of improved versions that can draw more than just landscapes. I think it is surprising that this kind of approach has not caught on, but perhaps there are economic reasons that I’m not aware of which explain the relative lack of interactive AI art tools.

The 1st photo of Earth from Europe’s powerful new satellite is amazing

Posted by in category: satellites

Europe’s newest weather satellite has snapped an image of the Earth that reveals our planet’s incredible beauty, despite gathering clouds.

The image taken by Meteosat Third Generation — Imager 1 (MTG-I1) shows conditions over Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic to an incredible level of detail and demonstrates that the satellite is set to live up to its promise of revolutionizing weather forecasting including the prediction of severe weather.

A new twist on chirality: Researchers extend the concept of directionality and propose a new class of materials

Posted by in categories: engineering, quantum physics

It is often desirable to restrict flows—whether of sound, electricity, or heat—to one direction, but naturally occurring systems almost never allow this. However, unidirectional flow can indeed be engineered under certain conditions, and the resulting systems are said to exhibit chiral behavior.

The concept of chirality is traditionally limited to single direction flows in one dimension. In 2021, however, researchers working with Taylor Hughes, a professor of physics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, introduced a theoretical extension that can account for more intricate chiral flows in two dimensions.

Now, a team led by Hughes and Gaurav Bahl, a UIUC professor of mechanical science & engineering, has experimentally realized this extension. As the researchers reported in Nature Communications, they constructed a topological circuit network, a system of electronics that simulates the microscopic behavior of quantum materials, to explore the entirely new behaviors predicted by this extended, or higher-rank chirality.

Dental Nanorobots: An Innovation to Improve Root Canal Treatment

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, chemistry, nanotechnology

Root canal treatment removes the infection and bacteria from the core of a tooth — the pulp chamber. These bacteria are often present within the canals of the teeth. However, proper treatment saves a badly infected natural tooth from needing to be extracted. Sufficient cleaning of the root canals is a key step of RCT. A lack of proper canal debridement can cause bacteria to thrive — a significant cause of RCT failures.

The tooth is washed with antibiotics or other chemicals that kill the bacteria to get rid of the infection. However, some teeth have complex root structures, and conventional ways of cleaning them are not enough to remove all bacteria. That’s one area where dental nanorobots can help. Nanorobots are showing promise in different steps of RCT, even better than traditional ways.
