MIT researchers demonstrate ability to tell a Boston Robotics robotic dog to fetch while wearing a pair of AttentivU mind-reading smart glasses

Posted by in category: robotics/AI

A MIT research group has demonstrated the ability to mind-control a 4-legged Boston Robotics Spot. Participants wore a pair of AttentivU smart glasses with built-in electrodes that can mind-read. They were able to tell the robotic dog to fetch items and move about by thoughts alone.

Happy 191st (or so) birthday to the world’s oldest living land animal

Posted by in category: futurism

Hollins is a veterinarian who has cared for the elderly tortoise and three other land tortoises on St. Helena Island since 2009.

Last year, St. Helena’s governor, Nigel Phillips, gave Jonathan an unofficial hatch date of Dec. 4, 1832, but Hollins still celebrates on New Year’s Day.

“It’s not his birthday, but celebrating his year of age, whatever that may be,” Hollins said.

DOES AI HAVE AGENCY? With Professor. Karl Friston and Riddhi J. Pitliya\
\
Agency in the context of cognitive science, particularly when considering the free energy principle, extends beyond just human decision-making and autonomy. It encompasses a broader understanding of how all living systems, including non-human entities, interact with their environment to maintain their existence by minimising sensory surprise.\
\
According to the free energy principle, living organisms strive to minimize the difference between their predicted states and the actual sensory inputs they receive. This principle suggests that agency arises as a natural consequence of this process, particularly when organisms appear to plan ahead many steps in the future. \
\
Riddhi J. Pitliya is based in the computational psychopathology lab doing her Ph.D at the University of Oxford and works with Professor Karl Friston at VERSES. \

A new, thin-lensed telescope design could far surpass JWST

Posted by in category: alien life

Astronomers have discovered more than 5,000 planets outside of the solar system to date. The grand question is whether any of these planets are home to life. To find the answer, astronomers will likely need more powerful telescopes than exist today.

I am an astronomer who studies astrobiology and planets around distant stars. For the last seven years, I have been co-leading a team that is developing a new kind of space telescope that could collect a hundred times more light than the James Webb Space Telescope, the biggest space telescope ever built.

Almost all space telescopes, including Hubble and Webb, collect light using mirrors. Our proposed telescope, the Nautilus Space Observatory, would replace large, heavy mirrors with a novel, thin lens that is much lighter, cheaper and easier to produce than mirrored telescopes. Because of these differences, it would be possible to launch many individual units into orbit and create a powerful network of telescopes.

Research at MSK unlocks new potentials in cancer treatment

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, genetics

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) has spearheaded revolutionary research unveiling groundbreaking strides in cancer treatment and understanding disease mechanisms.

Their discoveries include CAR T cell therapy targeting specific antigens in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), insights into the genetic element LINE-1, revelations on blood stem cell regulation, and a promising immunotherapy technique targeting CD47, showcasing potential breakthroughs in cancer therapy.

In the battle against acute myeloid leukemia (AML), traditional CAR T cell therapies faced hurdles due to varying antigens in AML cells and their similarity to normal blood stem cells, risking broader immune system damage.

A global dataset of pandemic- and epidemic-prone disease outbreaks

Posted by in categories: bioengineering, biotech/medical, genetics, nanotechnology

I believe nanomachines or new advanced rna antivirals that can target one’s own variants of viruses will be game changers to prevent future global pandemics. Also eventually new genetic engineering could allow for the end to all viruses with some sorta Omni vaccine.
