China to build 60 nuclear power plants in upcoming 10 years

China plans to build more than 60 nuclear power plants over the next 10 years.

The country’s three major nuclear companies — State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC), China National Nuclear Corporation, and China General Nuclear Power Corporation will each build at least two nuclear power plants annually.

SNPTC vice president Zheng Guangming made the announcement at the World Nuclear Association Symposium in London.

TEHRAN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) — Iran and Russia have agreed to build two nuclear power plants in Iran’s southern city of Bushehr shortly, Press TV reported on Thursday.

“Operations to build two new nuclear power plants in Bushehr will start on Sept. 10,” Press TV quoted Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), as saying.

Construction of the power plants, with an estimated cost of 10 billion U.S. dollars, will be completed in 10 years, Salehi said.

Meet the Reactors Accelerating Us Toward Fusion Energy

The old joke about fusion is that it is 30 years from becoming a reality — and that’s been the case for the last 50 years or more. It’s a joke that may quickly be reaching its sell-by date.

And a good thing too. The promise of fusion is near-unlimited energy that produces almost no waste.

Traditional nuclear reactors split atoms to create energy. These fission reactors run on processed uranium and leave behind radioactive waste. Fusion, on the other hand, is the same process that keeps the sun shining. Fusion reactors would run on abundant hydrogen isotopes and, in theory, create significantly more energy than fission with comparatively little waste.

Russia to Create New Powerful Plasma Rocket Engine

A Russian rocket engine company, with the assistance of a major research and development institute, will work on a project to create a powerful electrodeless plasma rocket engine, Russia’s Roscosmos space corporation said Wednesday.

The project will be developed by the Kurchatov Institute, Russia’s leading research and development institution in the field of nuclear energy, and the Chemical Automatics Design Bureau (CADB).

“The project involves the development of a new-generation electrodeless plasma engine. It is a high-power engine using fuel in a plasma state. It has a high energy efficiency, an ability to use almost any kind of rocket fuel… and its maximum engine power is limited only by the power supply of a high-frequency generator,” Roscosmos said in a statement.
