Those who are venturing into the architecture of the metaverse, have already asked themselves this question. A playful environment where all formal dreams are possible, where determining aspects for architecture such as solar orientation, ventilation, and climate will no longer be necessary, where – to Louis Kahn’s despair – there is no longer a dynamic of light and shadow, just an open and infinite field. Metaverse is the extension of various technologies, or even some call them a combination of some powerful technologies. These technologies are augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and a 3D world.

This technology is still under research. However, the metaverse seems to make a significant difference in the education domain. Also, its feature of connecting students across the world with a single metaverse platform may bring a positive change. But, the metaverse is not only about remote learning. It is much more than that.

Architecture emerged on the construction site, at a time when there was no drawing, only experimentation. Over time, thanks to Brunelleschi and the Florence dome in the 15th century, we witnessed the first detachment from masonry, a social division of labor from which liberal art and mechanical art emerge. This detachment generated different challenges and placed architecture on an oneiric plane, tied to paper. In other words, we don’t build any structures, we design them. Now, six centuries later, it looks like we are getting ready to take another step away from the construction site, abruptly distancing ourselves from engineering and construction.

The world has experienced a technological leap in the last decade. Innovations such as smartphones and tablets, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, and blockchain are coming with us. As is well known, these technologies have become indispensable, not only causing hype in one or the other but also permanently changing our daily lives and ways of working. Will this development slow down? I do not think so, the exact opposite. In the next 10 years, you can expect even more breakthroughs than you can imagine today.

Given the potential scope and capabilities of quantum technology, it is absolutely crucial not to repeat the mistakes made with AI—where regulatory failure has given the world algorithmic bias that hypercharges human prejudices, social media that favors conspiracy theories, and attacks on the institutions of democracy fueled by AI-generated fake news and social media posts. The dangers lie in the machine’s ability to make decisions autonomously, with flaws in the computer code resulting in unanticipated, often detrimental, outcomes. In 2021, the quantum community issued a call for action to urgently address these concerns. In addition, critical public and private intellectual property on quantum-enabling technologies must be protected from theft and abuse by the United States’ adversaries.

There are national defense issues involved as well. In security technology circles, the holy grail is what’s called a cryptanalytically relevant quantum computer —a system capable of breaking much of the public-key cryptography that digital systems around the world use, which would enable blockchain cracking, for example. That’s a very dangerous capability to have in the hands of an adversarial regime.

Experts warn that China appears to have a lead in various areas of quantum technology, such as quantum networks and quantum processors. Two of the world’s most powerful quantum computers were been built in China, and as far back as 2017, scientists at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei built the world’s first quantum communication network using advanced satellites. To be sure, these publicly disclosed projects are scientific machines to prove the concept, with relatively little bearing on the future viability of quantum computing. However, knowing that all governments are pursuing the technology simply to prevent an adversary from being first, these Chinese successes could well indicate an advantage over the United States and the rest of the West.

Unlike many of the so-called “artists” strewing junk around the halls of modern art museums, Jordan Tanner is actually pushing the frontiers of his craft. His eclectic portfolio includes vaporwave-inspired VR experiences, NFTs & 3D-printed figurines for Popular Front, and animated art for this very magazine. His recent AI-generated art made using OpenAI’s DALL-E software was called “STUNNING” by Lee Unkrich, the director of Coco and Toy Story 3.

We interviewed the UK-born, Israel-based artist about the imminent AI-generated art revolution and why all is not lost when it comes to the future of art. In Tanner’s eyes, AI-generated art is similar to having the latest, flashiest Nikon camera—it doesn’t automatically make you a professional photographer. Tanner also created a series of unique, AI-generated pieces for this interview which can be enjoyed below.

Thanks for talking to Countere, Jordan. Can you tell us a little about your background as an artist?

On Monday, hackers exploited a basic vulnerability in the code of Nomad — a crypto “bridge” that allows customers to transfer cryptocurrencies between different blockchains — getting away with roughly $190 million in user investments, CNBC reports.

This hack is just the latest in a string of attacks on crypto bridges, platforms that, according to CNBC, have collectively lost more than $1 billion to hackers in 2022 alone.

Given that Nomad markets itself as a “secure” platform, the company definitely has a lot of explaining to do.

Colombia’s government has launched a partnership with Ripple Labs, the company behind the cryptocurrency XRP, to put land titles on the blockchain, part of a plan to rectify land distribution efforts so unfair they’ve led to decades of armed conflict.

The project, built by blockchain development company Peersyst Technology and Ripple, will permanently store and authenticate property titles on Ripple’s Ledger—its public blockchain.

This will help eliminate bureaucracy and hopefully make land distribution more equal, Ripple Labs and Peersyst Technology told Decrypt.
