In a major leap toward sustainable energy, a team of Japanese researchers has developed an artificial photosynthesis system that could help generate hydrogen and oxygen from just water and light. The breakthrough is thanks to a new type of hydrogel, which mimics the natural process of photosynthesis and performs these reactions without requiring external energy. This innovation opens up exciting possibilities for clean energy production, potentially transforming the way we think about renewable resources.
Artificial photosynthesis has long been a goal for scientists looking to replicate the natural process plants use to convert light into energy. The concept is simple in theory: use light to drive chemical reactions that produce useful energy, such as hydrogen. However, previous attempts to harness this process have been hampered by the need for external energy to trigger the reactions, making the systems inefficient and difficult to scale.
Enter hydrogels —a promising new solution. These polymer-based materials are capable of responding to external stimuli like temperature, light, and pH. The challenge, however, has been that these materials often suffer from self-aggregation, where the molecules clump together and hinder the energy conversion process. The Japanese researchers, however, have overcome this obstacle by designing a hydrogel that maintains the precise arrangement of its molecules, enabling a more effective energy transfer.
New observations from the National Science Foundation National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s (NSF NRAO) Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (NSF VLA) provide compelling evidence supporting a universal mechanism for the collimation of astrophysical jets, regardless of their origin.
The new study, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, reveals the presence of a helical magnetic field within the HH 80–81 protostellar jet, a finding that mirrors similar structures observed in jets emanating from supermassive black holes.
Jets, powerful, highly collimated outflows of matter and energy, are observed across a vast range of scales in the universe. From the supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies to the young stars in our own Milky Way, these jets play a crucial role in the evolution of their host systems. However, the precise mechanism that guides these jets and prevents them from dispersing into space has remained a long-standing puzzle.
In today’s AI news, ElevenLabs said on Thursday it has raised $180 million in a new funding round that triples the voice cloning artificial intelligence startup’s valuation to $3.3 billion. The Series C funding round was co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and Iconiq Growth, with participation from additional new investors.
On Thursday, OpenAI announced that it is deepening its ties with the US government through a partnership with the National Laboratories and expects to use AI to “supercharge” research across a wide range of fields to better serve the public.
“This is the beginning of a new era, where AI will advance science, strengthen national security, and support US government initiatives,” OpenAI said.
In other advancements, Cerebras Systems announced today it will host DeepSeek’s breakthrough R1 artificial intelligence model on U.S. servers, promising speeds up to 57 times faster than GPU-based solutions while keeping sensitive data within American borders. The move comes amid growing concerns about China’s rapid AI advancement and data privacy.
And, the US Copyright Office issued AI guidance this week that declared no laws need to be clarified when it comes to protecting authorship rights of humans producing AI-assisted works. “Questions of copyrightability and AI can be resolved pursuant to existing law, without the need for legislative change,” the Copyright Office said.
