Android banking malware takes over calls to customer support

Posted by in categories: cybercrime/malcode, finance, robotics/AI

A banking trojan for Android that researchers call Fakecalls comes with a powerful capability that enables it to take over calls to a bank’s customer support number and connect the victim directly with the cybercriminals operating the malware.

Disguised as a mobile app from a popular bank, Fakecalls displays all the marks of the entity it impersonates, including the official logo and the customer support number.

When the victim tries to call the bank, the malware breaks the connection and shows its call screen, which is almost indistinguishable from the real one.

Lung Cancer Patients With Variant of the CTLA-4 Gene May Respond Better to Immunotherapy

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, genetics

A variant of the CTLA-4 gene associated with autoimmune disease was found to be more frequent in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who experienced an exceptionally high response to anti-PD-1 immunotherapy and higher immune-related side effects than in a comparable cohort of lung cancer patients and healthy individuals, according to data presented during the AACR Annual Meeting 2022, held April 8–13.

“Inhibitors of the immune checkpoint proteins PD-1/PD-L1 have transformed the cancer treatment landscape. However, there remains large variability in response and unpredictable adverse events, including autoimmune reactions, in NSCLC patients who undergo this treatment,” said presenter India Allen, BSc, from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, St Vincent’s Medical School, UNSW, Australia. “There are currently limited biomarkers to effectively predict this variability, and the extent to which a patient’s genetic makeup contributes to response is not well understood.”

The occurrence of immune-related adverse events (irAEs)—the side effects that arise in response to activation of the immune system by immunotherapy—is known to correlate with higher response to anti-PD-1 therapy and improved outcomes in NSCLC patients.

Directly Imaging Exoplanets with Dr. Thayne Currie

Posted by in category: space

My guest today is Dr. Thayne Currie, an astrophysicist at NASA-Ames Research Center and the Subaru Telescope. Dr. Currie was part of a team that directly imaged a newly-forming planet, providing evidence of another way large planets can form, and could have formed here in the Solar System.

Scientists Rewind The Clock of Human Skin Cells to Make Them Act 30 Years Younger

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, life extension

It’s not quite the mythical fountain of youth but it is, perhaps, a start: Scientists have managed to engineer human skin cells to reverse 30 years of aging, resetting them to a much more youthful state in terms of certain molecular measurements.

While it’s very early days for the research – so we shouldn’t get carried away too quickly – the technique could play a major part in efforts to produce rejuvenative medicine that’s able to undo some of the damaging consequences of our bodies getting older.

What makes the research particularly notable is that the skin cells were reprogrammed to be biologically younger while still keeping some of the functionality that made them skin cells in the first place.

Amazing fossils from the day of the Dinosaur-ending asteroid strike may have been found

Posted by in categories: asteroid/comet impacts, computing, existential risks

A completely intact dino-drumstick complete with skin and more. Just need 11 ancient herbs and spices.

The Tanis fossil site located in North Dakota in the United States of America is currently one of the most interesting places on Earth. Well that’s if you like dinosaurs and uncovering the ancient mysteries of our planet. Maybe you’re more into ancient computers that predict eclipses (opens in new tab). If not, uh, why not check out some of our hot Elden Ring content (opens in new tab)? We’ve got guides on the best builds (opens in new tab), how to survive (opens in new tab), and all sorts of stuff.

Ok, now that we’ve gotten rid of those people, back to the dinosaurs.

New York City Mapped All of its Trees and Calculated the Economic Benefits of Every Single One

Posted by in category: economics

Public spaces, squares, and parks in New York City are administered by the city’s Department of Parks & Recreation (NYC Parks).

In recent years, the agency has been responsible for creating new programs to help children, youth and adults be aware of the importance of caring for their urban landscape.

One of these programs is a TreesCount! which in 2015 gathered 2,300 volunteers to learn about the trees in their environment, what state they are in, what care they need, what their measurements are, and how they benefit the surrounding community, etc.

2020 One of the heaviest known elements can be modified more than scientists thought — possibly opening the door to new ways of recycling nuclear fuel and enhanced long-term storage of radioactive elements — according to a recent study published in the journal Nature.

Squeezing heavy elements between diamonds might open doors for recycling nuclear waste.

DALL·E 2

Posted by in category: robotics/AI

Without allowing users to generate violent, adult, or political content. Back in January of 2021, OpenAI introduced DALL-E, a neural network the company said can “take any text and make an image out of it,” according to OpenAI’s chief scientist and co-founder, Ilya Sutskever. This included concepts it may never have chanced upon during training.

DALL·E 2 is a new AI system that can create realistic images and art from a description in natural language.
