Christopher Nolan Recreated a Nuclear Weapon Explosion Without CGI, Developed New IMAX Film for ‘Oppenheimer’: ‘A Huge Challenge’

Christopher Nolan revealed to Total Film magazine that he recreated the first nuclear weapon detonation without CGI effects as part of the production for his new movie “Oppenehimer.” The film stars longtime Nolan collaborator Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, a leading figure of the Manhattan Project and the creation the atomic bomb during World War II. Nolan has always favored practical effects over VFX (he even blew up a real Boeing 747 for “Tenet”), so it’s no surprise he went the practical route when it came time to film a nuclear weapon explosion.

“I think recreating the Trinity test [the first nuclear weapon detonation, in New Mexico] without the use of computer graphics was a huge challenge to take on,” Nolan said. “Andrew Jackson — my visual effects supervisor, I got him on board early on — was looking at how we could do a lot of the visual elements of the film practically, from representing quantum dynamics and quantum physics to the Trinity test itself, to recreating, with my team, Los Alamos up on a mesa in New Mexico in extraordinary weather, a lot of which was needed for the film, in terms of the very harsh conditions out there — there were huge practical challenges.”

Happy Winter! I’m back with another upload, very different in style from my normal content. I’ve wanted to do a Mars colonization video for some time, but I wanted to get Far Future Uranus out and work on a couple other things not content-related beforehand. Making this video was pretty fun, surprisingly. I expected far more terrain buggyness than I actually encountered, and the Starships were really fun to fly. Getting good Starship / Super Heavy landing catch shots was a bit tedious, but it ended up looking good in the end. I’ll be back to more normal content (stuff like Far Future Uranus/Beyond Sol) next time. Also, the 1st part of this video (the part synced to Flight Hymn) is obviously inspired by @NessusKSP in his Far Future Saturn video, hats off to him for making some great content with it!

U.S. to reveal scientific milestone on fusion energy

WASHINGTON, Dec 12 (Reuters) — The U.S. Department of Energy on Tuesday will announce that scientists at a national lab have made a breakthrough on fusion, the process that powers the sun and stars that one day could provide a cheap source of electricity, three sources with knowledge of the matter said.

The scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California have achieved a net energy gain for the first time, in a fusion experiment using lasers, one of the people said.

While the results are a milestone in a scientific quest that has been developing since at least the 1930s, the ratio of energy going into the reaction at Livermore to getting energy out of it needs to be about 100 times bigger to create a process producing commercial amounts of electricity, one of the sources said.

Latest AI Research From Intel Explains an Alternative Approach to Train Deep Learning Models for Fast-Paced Real World Use Cases, Across a Variety of Industries

Object detection means all the techniques and means for detecting, identifying, and classifying objects in an image. Recently, the field of artificial intelligence has seen many advances thanks to deep learning and image processing. It is now possible to recognize images or even find objects inside an image. With deep learning, object detection has become very popular with several families of models (R-CNN, YOLO, etc.). However, most of the existing methods in the literature adapt to the training database and fail to generalize when faced with images belonging to different domains.

Although most architectures are optimized for well-known benchmarks, significant results have been achieved using CNNs for tasks particular to a certain domain. However, these domain-specific solutions are often well-tuned for a specific target dataset, starting with carefully chosen architecture and training techniques. This method of training models has the drawback of unnecessarily adapting the approaches to a particular dataset. To address this issue, a research team from Intel offers a different strategy that also serves as the foundation of the Intel® Geti™ platform: a dataset-agnostic template for object detection training made up of carefully selected and pre-trained models and a reliable training pipeline for additional training.

The authors experimented with architectures in three categories: lightweight, extremely accurate, and medium, to develop a scope of the models used for the various object detection datasets regardless of complexity and object size. Pretrained weights are employed to reach model convergence quickly and begin with high accuracy. In addition, a data augmentation operation is performed to augment images with a random crop, horizontal flip, and brightness and color distortions. Multiscale training was applied for medium and accurate models to make them more robust. Additionally, to strike a balance between accuracy and complexity, the authors empirically selected particular resolutions for each model after conducting several trials. Early stopping and the adaptive ReduceOnPlateau scheduler are also used to end training if a few epochs of training do not further improve the outcome.
