Philosophy and science are often thought of as separate things, but today I argue why they are more similar than we think. I also analyze why it is important to have a solid understanding of both, using critical thinking to acquire knowledge and use these tools to understand the world we live in.

Google’s X “moonshot factory” this week announced its latest graduate. Heritable Agriculture is a data-and machine learning-driven startup aiming to improve how crops are grown.
As the firm noted in an announcement post published Tuesday, plants are incredibly efficient and impressive systems. “Plants are solar powered, carbon negative, self-assembling machines that feed on sunlight and water,” Heritable wrote.
Yet agriculture puts a massive strain on the planet and its resources, accounting for around 25% of anthropogenic greenhouse emissions. It’s the planet’s largest consumer of groundwater and can lead to soil erosion and water pollution via pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals.

Thymic injury leads to reduced T cell production and makes patients more vulnerable to infections and cancers. Lemarquis et al. identify a population of recirculating regulatory T (Treg) cells that mediate regeneration in the injured thymus, partially through amphiregulin. An analogous population of Treg cells expressing CD39 and ICOS is found in humans, suggesting therapeutic avenues for boosting thymic regeneration to address aging-and treatment-induced immunosuppression.
