United Nations Meets Today to Finalize Global Treaty for the Ocean

Posted by in categories: economics, geopolitics, sustainability, treaties

UN hopes to complete revisions to the Law of the Sea governing the protection of marine biodiversity.

In 2017, the members of the General Assembly of the United Nations convened to review the existing Convention on the Law of Sea with the idea to look at providing protection for marine biodiversity and ocean waters beyond marine national government boundaries and exclusive economic zones. Subsequently, there have been meetings at the United Nations to work through outstanding issues with the last in August 2022. A revised Intergovernmental conference is now underway and expected to last two weeks to complete a new High Seas Treaty.

The world’s oceans and seas cover more than 70% of the planet’s surface. The ocean contains 1.35 billion cubic kilometres (324 million cubic miles) of water representing 97% of all the water on the planet. The ocean is where life on Earth first came from and is what makes the continuation of life on this planet possible.

Who is Enoch Root?

Posted by in category: futurism

Neal Stephenson’s “Fall; or, Dodge in Hell” (2019) is a festival of ideas centered on mind uploading and simulated realities.

After the three masterpieces “Snow Crash(1992), “The Diamond Age(1995), and “Cryptonomicon (1999), this is the novel of Stephenson that I have enjoyed more.

Long story short, tech entrepreneur Richard “Dodge” Forthrast, previously featured in “Reamde (2011), becomes the first human upload. Alone and initially selfless in his mindspace, which sits on a shapeless and chaotic bedrock of simulated reality, Dodge gradually recreates a “Bitworld” to live in.

Human Beats Artificial Intelligence in Go: Prof. Stuart J. Russell Highlights Fundamental Flaw in AI like AlphaGo

Posted by in categories: entertainment, robotics/AI

In a stunning turn of events, a top-ranking AI system was soundly defeated by a human player in the strategic board game Go. This marks a significant reversal of the 2016 victory by the computer, which was widely celebrated as a landmark achievement in the field of artificial intelligence. The victorious player, Kellin Pelrine, holds a rank just below the top amateur level and was able to exploit a previously unidentified vulnerability in the AI system that had been detected by another computer. The games were played without any direct computer assistance, and Pelrine emerged as the clear winner by winning 14 out of 15 games.

Financial Times mentioned that this victory, which has not been previously disclosed, brought to light a flaw in the top Go computer programs that is common to many of today’s prevalent AI systems, including San Francisco-based OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot. The strategy used to win the Go match was proposed by a computer program that investigated the AI systems to discover any weaknesses. Pelrine, who executed the proposed plan with merciless precision, was able to use the tactics to put the human player back on top of the Go board.

Scientists discovered evidence of magnetic fields in the universe’s cosmic web

Posted by in category: cosmology

The cosmic web is the term used to refer to the clusters, filaments, and voids that make up the large-scale structure of the Universe. In Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmology, this web is formed from the anisotropic gravitational collapse of matter from primordial overdensities.

We’ve been able to map the Cosmic Web through observation over the past few decades, which opens up the possibility of finding answers to some of astronomy’s most pressing issues. An area of particular interest is how magnetic fields behave on a cosmic scale and their role in galactic and cosmic structure formation.

ICRAR scientists discover tantalizing evidence of magnetic fields in the universe’s most significant cosmic structures.
