Spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs) are nanoscale spintronic devices that convert direct current into high-frequency microwave signals through spin wave auto-oscillations. This is a type of nonlinear magnetization oscillations that are self-sustained without the need for a periodic external force.

Theoretical and simulation studies found that propagating spin-wave modes, in which spin waves move across materials instead of being confined to the auto-oscillation region, can promote the coupling between SHNOs.

This coupling may in turn be harnessed to adjust the timing of oscillations in these devices, which could be advantageous for the development of neuromorphic computing systems and other spintronic devices.

Researchers discovered that amyloid precursor protein interacts with talin to maintain synaptic stability. Disruptions in this interaction may lead to Alzheimer’s disease by impairing mechanical signaling, triggering synaptic degeneration, and promoting amyloid plaque formation.

“Let’s say a certain protein is expressed very highly in a cell. But when you actually look at it and see it, all of it is localised at the tip of the neuron where something very specific is happening,” he added.

Hassabis also stated that this could be crucial for understanding how a cell reacts to the injection of a specific nutrient or drug. At present, this process is carried out ‘painstakingly’ in a laboratory, but according to him, this project would enable researchers to perform it a million times faster and at a lower cost.

However, he noted that a laboratory would still be required as a final step to validate the predictions and conduct clinical trials to assess the efficacy of the research. Hassabis mentioned that the virtual cell project may materialise within five years from now.

Findings indicate that even modest levels of physical activity can be beneficial. The Blue Ghost lunar lander has captured its first images of the moon from the spacecraft’s orbit around Earth, the Texas-based company Firefly Aerospace announced this week.

The two images — which the company posted Monday on the social media platform X — features a view of the moon from the top deck of the 6.6-foot-tall (2-meter-tall) lunar lander as well as a snapshot of the celestial orb on its own.

As the spacecraft continues its journey to the moon, with an expected landing date of March 2, Firefly plans to provide regular mission updates, the company said.

“These are among the smallest signals detected by the Swarm mission so far,” Alexander Grayver, a geophysics researcher at the University of Cologne in Germany, said in the statement. “The data are particularly good because they were gathered during a period of solar minimum, when there was less noise due to space weather.”

The Swarm mission has already passed its expected end of life, but researchers hope the satellites will remain operational until the next solar minimum, which will come at around 2030.

The study was published in the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A in December 2024.
