Researchers develop high-performance zero thermal expansion composite for precision devices

Recently, a research group led by Prof. Peng Tong from Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HFIPS), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), significantly improved the negative thermal expansion (NTE) effect of Cu2P2O7, a new but excellent NTE material, and prepared a zero thermal expansion (ZTE) Cu2P2O7/2024Al composite with high specific thermal conductivity and good machinability.

The research results were published in Journal of Materials Science & Technology and Ceramics International.

With the advancement of high-tech fields, it is not possible to adjust the dimensions of precision equipment. However, thermal expansion with temperature is a of many regularly used materials that is difficult to control. Combining NTE materials with ordinary positive materials is an efficient way to produce ZTE materials.

Scientists Discover “Demon” Particle

Right in time for spooky season, scientists have discovered the existence of something called the “demon” particle. While the name of the material may strike terror in some, its discovery is actually far less sinister. Hidden from researchers for over seven decades, the “composite” of electrons was recently discovered according to a new study published in Nature.

“Demons have been theoretically conjectured for a long time, but experimentalists never studied them,” paper senior author Peter Abbamonte said in the study. “In fact, we weren’t even looking for it. But it turned out we were doing exactly the right thing, and we found it.”

Underwater Laser Cutting Method Saves Energy, Optimizes Efficiency

The need for modern technologies to dismantle existing underwater infrastructure is growing due to increasing demand for renewable energy sources. For example, to bring a wind power plant in the sea up to higher powers, the existing old steel frames, which may be below sea level, must first be dismantled so that engineers can rebuild them to obtain these higher powers.

In laboratory tests, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS (Fraunhofer IWS) have developed a shortwave green laser method for beneath-sea cutting that offers multiple advantages over commonly used techniques that use saws, automatic saw wires, and plasma cutters, for example.

According to the researchers, the technique is possible because of the availability of shortwave green lasers in the more-than-1-Kw-class, which are required to achieve the necessary cutting power. In the future, the researchers said, shorter-wavelength versions with blue lasers are conceivable.

REM Atoms and Nanophotonic Resonator Offer Path to Quantum Networks

Researchers at Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ) and Technical University of Munich (TUM) demonstrated a potential platform for large-scale quantum computing and communication networks. Secure quantum networks are of interest to financial institutions, medical facilities, government agencies, and other organizations that handle personal data and classified information due to their much higher level of security.

To create an environment that supported quantum computing, the researchers excited individual atoms of the rare-earth metal erbium. The excitation process caused the erbium atoms to emit single photons with properties suitable for the construction of quantum networks.
