The Dimensity 9,000 is both the first smartphone chip to be built using TSMC’s new 4nm process and the first chip to feature Arm’s new Cortex-X2 CPU core. The flagship chip is based on the new ArmV9 architecture and will feature the Cortex X2 as an “ultra” performance core, three Cortex-A710 cores as general “super” performance cores, and four Cortex-A510 efficiency cores. The Dimensity 9,000 will support LPDDR5x memory at bandwidths of up to 7,500 Mbps.

The big jumps in performance don’t stop there: The Dimensity 9,000 is also the first chip to feature Arm’s Mali G710-MC10 GPU, along with industry-leading support for raytracing via the Vulkan SDK for Android. And while there aren’t any phones currently available that have pushed refresh rates this high, MediaTek claims the Dimensity 9,000 can handle screens with up to a 180Hz refresh rate at FHD+ resolutions.

The Dimensity 9,000 also supports the first 18-bit image signal processor, which gives the chip the ability to capture 4K HDR video using up to three cameras at the same time, or still photos using up to a massive 320-MP sensor (assuming device makers can find a 320-MP sensor that fits in a phone).

Near-field wireless power transfer is already used in some applications, such as charging pads for smartphones. However, longer-range transfer of energy has the potential to radically improve our home, office, and other indoor environments, by completely untethering devices from cables and reducing or eliminating the need for batteries.

French company ARCHOS has announced a partnership with U.S. company Ossia Inc, to integrate a wireless power system into consumer products next year.

The team has set an internal deadline of 2025.

In a move that could peg it against electric vehicle market leader, Tesla, Apple has begun working aggressively on its fully autonomous electric car, Bloomberg reported. Developing a car has been on Apple’s agenda since 2014 but recent moves within the company signal a push towards making an Apple car a reality.

Given Apple’s history of taking regularly used products and transforming them into their must-have versions using excellent design, it is hardly a surprise. With Steve Jobs at the helm of affairs, Apple made the iPod even when music players were ubiquitous. Then the company revealed the iPhone when Nokia was still selling resistive touch screens as its premium product. And recently, the Apple Watch has become the “it” wearable even though there are other smartwatch options in the market. During a time where electric vehicles are in a surge, it only seems natural that the electric car is Apple’s next target.

Researchers at ETH Zurich have discovered major vulnerabilities in DRAM memory devices, which are widely used in computers, tablets and smartphones. The vulnerabilities have now been published together with the National Cyber Security Centre, which for the first time has assigned an identification number for it.

When browsing the internet on a laptop computer or writing messages on a smartphone, we all like to think that we are reasonably safe from hacker attacks as long as we have installed the latest software updates and anti-virus software. But what if the problem lies not with the software, but with the hardware? A team of researchers led by Kaveh Razavi at ETH Zurich, together with colleagues at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Qualcomm Technologies, have recently discovered fundamental vulnerabilities affecting the memory component called DRAM at the heart of all modern computer systems.

The results of their research have now been accepted for publication at a flagship IT security conference, and the Swiss National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has issued a Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) number. This is the first time that a CVE identification has been issued by the NCSC in Switzerland (see box below). On a scale of 0 to 10, the severity of the vulnerability has been rated as 9.

Today, ZTE Mobile announced that it will release the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra aerospace version on November 25. The smartphone will be endorsed by Liu Haocun, the heroine of Zhang Yimou’s movie “One Second”. The main highlight of this smartphone is that it is the world’s first smartphone with 18GB RAM. However, this memory capacity can get to over 20GB RAM. Furthermore, this device will also come with 1TB of internal storage. This is currently the flagship smartphone with the largest memory and storage capacity in the industry.

Apple delivered an early holiday gift to the eco-conscious and the do-it-yourselfers: It said it would soon begin selling the parts, tools and instructions for people to do their own iPhone repairs. It was a major victory for the “right to repair” movement.

Rumors that Tesla is indeed making a smartphone were bolstered after the world-famous design studio ADR released concept images (in a video). This made people wonder: Is Tesla going to go after the iPhone — or simply create an entirely new market segment, such as a true-to-form satellite phone that works where traditional WiFi or 5G services are absent, and able to mine cryptocurrencies anywhere, including on the planet Mars?While speculations abound, there are numerous unanswered questions, such as: how much would it retail for? Does it have a sim card? What’s the monthly charge for using Starlink? Can I buy one, without first buying a Tesla EV? Its release date is a closely-guarded secret. A Starlink antenna is being taken out of the box. Tech publications have leaked images of the new device supposedly out of the EV maker, including some details of what it can do.
