Mapping the hidden connections between diseases

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, education, health

A new study led by UCL researchers has identified patterns in how common health conditions occur together in the same individuals, using data from 4 million patients in England.

With advancing age, millions of people live with multiple conditions—sometimes referred to as multimorbidity—and the proportion of people affected in this way is expected to rise over the next decades. However, and training, , clinical guidelines and research have evolved to focus on one disease at a time.

The Academy of Medical Sciences and the UK Chief Medical Officer (CMO) have recognized this problem and set out a challenge of investigating which diseases co-occur in the same individuals and why.

Native American inventor Danielle Boyer combines tradition and innovation through robotics

Posted by in categories: education, robotics/AI

Danielle Boyer knew she was interested in robotics from a young age. But with limited learning resources — a problem many Native American students face — Boyer, who is Ojibwe, said she had to take things into her own hands.

She taught herself through watching YouTube videos, flipping through old electrical engineering books, examining maker kits on Amazon, and then “reverse engineering” everything.

Now, as the founder of the nonprofit The STEAM Connection, Boyer, 22, is on a mission to promote technical and cultural educational opportunities among Native American youth like herself — sometimes combining both in the form of robots that teach Indigenous languages, as they face risks of dying out.

Physicists observe wormhole dynamics using a quantum computer

Posted by in categories: computing, cosmology, education, quantum physics

Scientists have, for the first time, developed a quantum experiment that allows them to study the dynamics, or behavior, of a special kind of theoretical wormhole. The experiment has not created an actual wormhole (a rupture in space and time), rather it allows researchers to probe connections between theoretical wormholes and quantum physics, a prediction of so-called quantum gravity. Quantum gravity refers to a set of theories that seek to connect gravity with quantum physics, two fundamental and well-studied descriptions of nature that appear inherently incompatible with each other.

“We found a that exhibits key properties of a gravitational wormhole yet is sufficiently small to implement on today’s quantum hardware,” says Maria Spiropulu, the principal investigator of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science research program Quantum Communication Channels for Fundamental Physics (QCCFP) and the Shang-Yi Ch’en Professor of Physics at Caltech. “This work constitutes a step toward a larger program of testing quantum gravity physics using a quantum computer. It does not substitute for direct probes of quantum gravity in the same way as other planned experiments that might probe quantum gravity effects in the future using quantum sensing, but it does offer a powerful testbed to exercise ideas of quantum gravity.”

The research will be published December 1 in the journal Nature. The study’s first authors are Daniel Jafferis of Harvard University and Alexander Zlokapa (BS ‘21), a former undergraduate student at Caltech who started on this project for his bachelor’s thesis with Spiropulu and has since moved on to graduate school at MIT.

In a first, researchers discovered a rare mineral that comes directly from Earth’s lower mantle

Posted by in category: education

This is “the first time that lower mantle minerals have ever been observed in nature.”

Researchers claim they have discovered a rare mineral that comes directly from Earth’s lower mantle-the region between the planet’s core and crust — in a new study published in Science.

However, thanks to a diamond-in which it was entrapped — the new mineral dubbed ‘davemaoite,’ managed to make the improbable voyage from at least 412 meters within the lower mantle.
