Technology is NOT Enough!

Fifteen years ago, I wrote something that annoyed many techno-optimists.

Ten years ago, I filmed it as a podcast.

Today it feels less controversial — and more urgent.

Technology is NOT Enough.

We have the science to feed everyone. We have the tech to provide clean water. We understand climate change. We know how to reduce suffering.

And yet we don’t act.

Why?

Because technology doesn’t fix values. It doesn’t create courage. It doesn’t override denial. It doesn’t replace responsibility.

We treat science and AI like a new deity — either it will save us, or it will destroy us. Both stories let us off the hook.

The uncomfortable truth is this:

Humanity is both the greatest threat and the greatest hope for humanity.

Not some external force. Not a future superintelligence. Not a miracle breakthrough.

We are driving the train. We can keep accelerating toward the wreck. Or we can take our foot off the gas.

Intelligence scales. Tools improve. Power compounds.

But without wisdom, restraint, and moral clarity, more capability just magnifies our flaws.

If we want a better future, we don’t just need better technology.

We need better humans.

Science and technology won’t save the world. Never have. It’s just like saying “Jesus will save you!” It evokes the very same passive quasi-religious hope that something or someone out there will magically solve all our problems, bring abundance in our lives, help us live forever and bring back the dead.
