Chair emeritus, SETI institute â the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
Dr. Jill Tarter is Chair Emeritus for SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Research at the SETI Institute, a not-for-profit research organization whose mission is to explore, understand, and explain the origin and nature of life in the universe, and to apply the knowledge gained to inspire and guide present and future generations.
Dr. Tarter received her Bachelor of Engineering Physics Degree with Distinction from Cornell University and her Masterâs Degree and a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley. She served as Project Scientist for NASAâs SETI program, the High Resolution Microwave Survey, and has conducted numerous observational programs at radio observatories worldwide. Since the termination of funding for NASAâs SETI program in 1993, she has served in a leadership role to secure private funding to continue the exploratory science. Currently, she serves on the management board for the Allen Telescope Array, an innovative array of 350 (when fully realized) 6-m antennas at the Hat Creek Radio Observatory, it will simultaneously survey the radio universe for known and unexpected sources of astrophysical emissions, and speed up the search for radio emissions from other distant technologies by orders of magnitude.
Opinion: The best vaccination strategy is simple: Focus on Americans 65 and older.
Yes, essential workers are at risk, but older Americans should be prioritized first.
The âFlesh Without Bloodâ singer put a timeline on the plans, stating: âLetâs aim for chips by 2022. Itâs experimental surgery but if it succeeds weâll have the knowledge of the Gods haha.â
Lil Uzi agreed, writing: âOkay!!! I will call u for more detail.â
Nanoscale doctors curing the body from within sounds like science fiction, but for Japanese research centre COINS, itâs a serious goal.
Recalibrated Betelgeuseâs mass, radius, and distance. Betelgeuse is normally one of the brightest, most recognizable stars of the winter sky, marking the left shoulder of the constellation Orion. But lately, it has been behaving strangely: an unprecedentedly large drop in its brightness has been observed in early 2020 (Figure 1), which has prompted speculation that Betelgeuse may be about to explode.
Systems designed to detect deepfakesâvideos that manipulate real-life footage via artificial intelligenceâcan be deceived, computer scientists showed for the first time at the WACV 2021 conference which took place online Jan. 5 to 92021.
SpaceX is set to test the Starship SN10 prototype on Monday at the Boca Chica launch facility. The exact details for the round of testing have not been confirmed, but it will likely be a cryogenic proof test.

Additive manufacturing has proven an ideal solution for certain tasks, but the technology still lacks more traditional methods in a number of categories. One of the biggest is the requirement for post-printing assembly. 3D printers can create extremely complex components, but an outside party (be it human or machine) is required to put them together.
MITâs CSAIL department this week showcased âLaserFactory,â a new project that attempts to develop robotics, drones and other machines than can be fabricated as part of a âone-stop shop.â The system is comprised of a software kit and hardware platform designed to create structures and assemble circuitry and sensors for the machine.
A more fully realized version of the project will be showcased at an event in May, but the team is pulling back the curtain a bit to show what the concept looks like in practice. Hereâs a breakdown from CSAILâs page:
