Seismic study reveals key reason why Patagonia is rising as glaciers melt

Posted by in category: futurism

The icefields that stretch for hundreds of miles atop the Andes mountain range in Chile and Argentina are melting at some of the fastest rates on the planet. The ground that was beneath this ice is also shifting and rising as these glaciers disappear. Geologists have discovered a link between recent ice mass loss, rapid rock uplift and a gap between tectonic plates that underlie Patagonia.

Scientists at Washington University in St. Louis, led by seismologist Douglas Wiens, the Robert S. Brookings Distinguished Professor in Arts & Sciences, recently completed one of the first seismic studies of the Patagonian Andes. In a new publication in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, they describe and map out local subsurface dynamics.

“Variations in the size of glaciers, as they grow and shrink, combined with the mantle structure that we’ve imaged in this study are driving rapid and spatially variable uplift in this region,” said Hannah Mark, a former Steve Fossett postdoctoral fellow in earth and planetary sciences at Washington University, the first author of the publication. Mark is now a postdoctoral investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Garry Kasparov Speaks To Rajdeep Sardesai On Russia-Ukraine War, Vladimir Putin & More | Exclusive

Posted by in categories: business, security, transportation

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been preparing for the war in Ukraine in plain sight, said Russian Chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov. He added that the Russian invasion of Ukraine could have been avoided had Western countries listened to what Vladimir Putin had been saying.
In an exclusive interview with India Today, Kasparov said, “Back in 2007 at the Munich Security Conference, he [Putin] had talked about spheres of influence. He wanted the world to be divided in the fashion of the past where big countries dictated to smaller countries how to behave.
“Putin has been preparing for the war in Ukraine in plain sight. He bought his Pacific fleet to the Black Sea. Russian forces have now surrounded Ukraine from all sides.“
The 58-year-old former World Chess Champion, however, said that what is happening in Ukraine now is a deviation from Russia’s plans.
“Russia failed to take over Kyiv in two or three days as planned. The heroic defence by Ukrainians has harmed Putin’s image as an invincible leader,” Kasparov said.

ESP32 Virtual Machine Lets You Change Programs On The Fly

Posted by in categories: computing, entertainment

Often, reprogramming a microcontroller involves placing it in reset, flashing the code, and letting it fire back up. It usually involves shutting the chip down entirely. However, [bor0] has built a virtual machine that runs on the ESP32, allowing for dynamic program updates to happen.

The code is inspired by the CHIP-8, a relatively ancient interpreter that had some gaming applications. [bor0] had already created a VM simulating the CHIP-8, and repurposed it here, taking out the gaming-related drawing instructions and replacing them with those that control IO pins. Registers have also been changed to 16 bits for added flexibility and headroom.

It’s probably not something with immediate ground-breaking applications for most people, but it’s a different way of working with and programming the ESP32, and that’s pretty neat.

China shared U.S. intelligence on Ukraine crisis with Russia

Posted by in categories: government, military

China’s government took U.S. intelligence provided to convince Beijing to join American-led efforts to head off a military attack on Ukraine and shared it with Russia, according to a person familiar with the activity.

Intelligence-sharing with a major U.S. adversary is unusual but was part of repeated diplomatic efforts by the Biden administration to gain support from China in dissuading Russian President Vladimir Putin from invading Ukraine.

Pentagon wants Moscow back channels to prevent nuclear escalation

Posted by in categories: military, mobile phones

“Now that Ukrainian airspace is in dispute and being contested and Ukrainian airspace runs right up alongside NATO airspace, we have conveyed to the Russians that we believe a conduit at the operational level is needed … so we can avoid miscalculation,” a senior Pentagon official told POLITICO. “And we have not received any response from them in terms of whether they agree, whether they are willing to set something up.”

As the U.S. and NATO rush weapons into Ukraine, DoD officials want more military channels to Putin’s top leaders. But Russia’s not picking up the phone.
