A Tohoku University researcher has increased the performance of a high-power electrodeless plasma thruster, moving us one step closer to deeper explorations into space.

Innovations in terrestrial transportation technologies, such as cars, trains, and aircraft, have driven historical technologies and industries so far; now, a similar breakthrough is occurring in space thanks to electric propulsion technology.

Electric propulsion is a technique utilizing to accelerate a propellant and to generate thrust that propels a spacecraft. Space agencies have pioneered electric propulsion technology as the future of space exploration.

Today we return to the Fermi Paradox to contemplate the notion of civilizations which neither expand outwards to colonize the galaxy nor go extinct, but exist as long-term, high-tech civilizations just on their own planet or solar system. First insights into engineering crystal growth by atomically precise metal nanoclusters have been achieved in a study performed by researchers in Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Finland. The work was published in Nature Chemistry.

Ordinary solid matter consists of atoms organized in a crystal lattice. The chemical character of the atoms and lattice symmetry define the properties of the matter, for instance, whether it is a metal, a semiconductor or and electric insulator. The lattice symmetry may be changed by such as temperature or , which can induce structural transitions and transform even an electric insulator to an electric conductor, that is, a metal.

Larger identical entities such as nanoparticles or atomically precise metal nanoclusters can also organize into a , to form so called meta-materials. However, information on how to engineer the growth of such materials from their has been scarce since the is a typical self-assembling process.

Google has removed two new malicious dropper apps that have been detected on the Play Store for Android, one of which posed as a lifestyle app and was caught distributing the Xenomorph banking malware.

โ€œXenomorph is a trojan that steals credentials from banking applications on usersโ€™ devices,โ€ Zscaler ThreatLabz researchers Himanshu Sharma and Viral Gandhi said in an analysis published Thursday.

โ€œIt is also capable of intercepting usersโ€™ SMS messages and notifications, enabling it to steal one-time passwords and multi-factor authentication requests.โ€

Recent progress in generative models has paved the way to a manifold of tasks that some years ago were only imaginable. With the help of large-scale image-text datasets, generative models can learn powerful representations exploited in fields such as text-to-image or image-to-text translation.

The recent release of Stable Diffusion and the DALL-E API led to great excitement around text-to-image generative models capable of generating complex and stunning novel images from an input descriptive text, similar to performing a search on the internet.

With the rising interest in the reverse task, i.e., image-to-text translation, several studies tried to generate captions from input images. These methods often presume a one-to-one correspondence between pictures and their captions. However, multiple images can be connected to and paired with a long text narrative, such as photos in a news article. Therefore, the need for illustrative correspondences (e.g., โ€œtravelโ€ or โ€œvacationโ€) rather than literal one-to-one captions (e.g., โ€œairplane flyingโ€).
