A U.K. teen with an aggressive form of leukemia is now cancer-free, thanks to a new gene-editing therapy.

The particular therapy used on the patient was only invented six years ago, and it’s now making doctors rethink the way doctors approach the disease.

Pro eater James Webb devours nearly SIXTY donuts in eight minutes

Proof that there are still important things that humans can do but AIs can’t!


He might not be running on Dunkin’ anytime soon, but Australia’s James Webb set a new world record after devouring 59 and a half donuts in eight minutes at a competition in San Diego on Friday.

The event was part of National Donut Day World Donut Eating Championship on the USS Midway and a sanctioned Major League Eating event.

The previous standing world record was a mere 55 donuts in eight minutes, which Webb smashed through. The next closest competitor, Nick Wehry, could only manage 54.75 donuts.

Crypto exchange Binance hit by outflows of $780 million in last 24 hours

LONDON, June 6 (Reuters) — Investors have pulled around $780 million from crypto exchange Binance in the last 24 hours, data firm Nansen said on Tuesday, a day after the world’s biggest crypto exchange was sued by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Binance’s U.S. affiliate exchange registered net outflows of $13 million in the same period, Nansen said. Neither Binance nor Binance. US immediately responded to a request for comment.

Throw Forward Thursday: CRISPR

The 2020 Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded to Dr. Jennifer Doudna and Dr. Emmanuelle Charpentier for their work on the gene editing technique known as CRISPR-Cas9. This gives us the ability to change the DNA of any living thing, from plants and animals to humans.

The applications are enormous, from improving farming to curing diseases. A decade or so from now, CRISPR will no doubt be taught in High Schools, and be a basic building block of medicine and agriculture. It is going to change everything.

There are ethical and moral concerns, of course, and we will need regulations to ensure this powerful technology is not abused. But we should focus on the remarkable opportunities CRISPR has opened up for us.

Details of cellular process which stops cancer developing revealed

Researchers have for the first time characterised the molecular mechanism of the early stages of programmed cell death or apoptosis, a process which plays a crucial role in the prevention of cancer.

The study, published today (2 June) in Science Advances, was led by Dr Luke Clifton at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (ISIS) in Oxfordshire. They worked alongside partners at the University of Umea and European Spallation Source in Sweden.

It is the most recent in a series of research collaborations by this team, investigating the cellular proteins responsible for apoptosis.

As I write this article, NVIDIA( is surpassing Wall Street’s expectations. The company, headquartered in Santa Clara, California, has just joined the exclusive club of only five companies in the world valued at over a trillion dollars [Apple (2.7T), Microsoft (2.4T), Saudi Aramco (2T), Alphabet/Google (1.5T), and Amazon (1.2T)], as its shares rose nearly 25% in a single day! A clear sign of how the widespread use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) can dramatically reshape the technology sector.

Intel has announced an ambitious plan to develop scientific generative AIs designed with one trillion parameters. These models will be trained on various types of data, including general texts, code, and scientific information. In comparison, OpenAI’s GPT-3 has 175 billion parameters (the size of GPT-4 has not yet been disclosed by OpenAI). The semiconductor company’s main focus is to apply these AIs in the study of areas such as biology, medicine, climate, cosmology, chemistry, and the development of new materials. To achieve this goal, Intel plans to launch a new supercomputer called Aurora, with processing capacity exceeding two EXAFLOPS(*, later this year.
