Two enormous cracks in Earth’s crust opened near the Turkish-Syrian border after two powerful earthquakes shook the region on Monday (Feb. 6), killing over 20,000 people.

Researchers from the U.K. Centre for the Observation & Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes & Tectonics (COMET) found the ruptures by comparing images of the area near the Mediterranean Sea coast taken by the European Earth-observing satellite Sentinel-1 before and after the devastating earthquakes.

The longer of the two ruptures stretches 190 miles (300 kilometers) in the northeastern direction from the northeastern tip of the Mediterranean Sea. The crack was created by the first of the two major tremors that hit the region on Monday, the more powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck at 4:17 a.m. local time (8:17 p.m. EST on Feb. 5). The second crack, 80 miles long (125 km), opened during the second, somewhat milder 7.5-magnitude temblor about nine hours later, COMET said in a tweet on Friday (Feb. 10).

Wormholes are an intriguing bit that most people probably chalk up to science fiction. After all, seeing the Millennium Falcon barreling through hyperspeed in Star Wars is exciting, but there’s no way we could ever actually travel like that, right? Well, it might not actually be that impossible. According to new research, scientists were able to make a man-made wormhole using a quantum processor.

Of course, this isn’t to be misconstrued. They didn’t actually make a wormhole that someone was able to rip through space and time. Instead, they made a small, crummy wormhole on a quantum processor that could help teach us more about traversable wormhole dynamics. As such, the man-made wormhole, even if crummy, could be home to a plethora of data.

The physicists shared a paper detailing their findings on the man-made wormhole in the journal Nature. According to that paper, the “baby wormhole” was a successful attempt at observing traversable wormhole dynamics, something physicists have been trying to understand for decades. And, with scientists recently discovering a way to find wormholes in space, it could be more important than ever.

Feb. 11 (UPI) — The death toll from Monday’s devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria is continuing to climb, surpassing 25,000 as of late Saturday, according to a new official count.

Officials confirmed more than 80,000 injuries as of 7:30 p.m. local time stemming from the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes which struck early Monday morning, according to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Nearly 2,000 aftershocks also hit the region with more than 13 million people across 10 provinces affected in some way.

Mathematical pursuits and religious pursuits are alike in many ways and evoke similar feelings and responses in their devotees. However, this observation is not a universal claim about the faith convictions of mathematical thinkers. Throughout mathematical history, we find plenty of adherents of various faith traditions — Ramanujan, Agnesi, Euler, al-Khwārizmī, or even the Pythagoreans come to mind. However, many mathematicians are atheist or agnostic. A 1998 survey of National Academy members shows that mathematicians in that organization are less religious than the general public (though they are slightly more religious than other scientists). Even so, those who pursue mathematical experiences and those who pursue religious experiences share a lot in common.

Such commonality is in part due to the explanatory power of both mathematics and religion. Mathematics offers insights about physical phenomena. Religion offers insights about human nature. So it is natural to seek them out for wisdom in their respective domains. Their truths are not always directly apparent, sometimes taking years of study. And their interpretations or applications sometimes need to be challenged.

We take them for granted until we can’t. That’s why people react so strongly to the fear of losing their memories — either by forgetting small things in the sort term (which we all do; don’t worry), or else the fear of either us or a loved one suffering from memory loss in our older age.

And, that’s why I’d like to talk today about habits and brain health, and cinnamon.

Yes, cinnamon, the tasty and sweet-smelling spice originating in Asia, and found liberally in the U.S., combined with raisins on bagels, toast, pastries, even big boxes of processed cereal with cartoon characters on the front.

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, today showed off a prototype of an AI system that enables people to generate or import things into a virtual world just by using voice commands. The company sees the tool, which is called “Builder Bot,” as an “exploratory concept” that shows AI’s potential for creating new worlds in the metaverse. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed off the prototype at the Meta AI: Inside the Lab event on Wednesday in a pre-recorded demo video.

In the video, Zuckerberg explained the process of building parts of a virtual world by describing them. He begins with the prompt, “let’s go to a park.” The bot then creates a 3D landscape of a park with green grass and trees. Zuckerberg then says “actually, let’s go to the beach,” after which the bot replaces the current landscape with a new one of sand and water. He then says he wants to add clouds and notes that everything is AI-generated. Zuckerberg then changes up the landscape by saying he’d rather have altocumulus clouds, which is meant to demonstrate how specific the voice commands can be.

He then points to a specific area of the water and says “let’s add an island over there,” and then the bot creates one. Zuckerberg then issues several other voice commands, such as adding trees and a picnic blanket. He also adds the sound of seagulls and whales. At one point, he even adds a hydrofoil — a nod to one of his favorite hobbies, which later turned into a meme.
