Scientists Claim to Have Discovered the “Secret Ingredient for Building Life”

Posted by in categories: bioengineering, chemistry

A team of researchers from Purdue University claim to have discovered the “chemistry behind the origin of life” on Earth in simple droplets of water, and they’re using strikingly strong language to celebrate the findings.

Graham Cooks, chemistry professor at Purdue and lead author of a new paper published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, called it a “dramatic discovery” and the “secret ingredient for building life” in a statement.

“This is essentially the chemistry behind the origin of life,” he added. “This is the first demonstration that primordial molecules, simple amino acids, spontaneously form peptides, the building blocks of life, in droplets of pure water.”

Arizona town looks for solutions amid Western water crisis

Posted by in category: sustainability

Drive just North of Scottsdale, Arizona, and you’ll find a loose grid of dirt roads known as the Rio Verde Foothills. It’s home to around 2,000 families drawn to rustic desert beauty and the freedom of living outside the city limits, but the town is about to become a symbol of the West’s growing water crisis.

John Hornewer moved to the area 23 years ago. When he discovered his new community didn’t have water service, he began hauling water for himself, along with some of his neighbors.

“As my neighbor saw me coming up the road with the trailer, they were like, ‘Hey, could you stop and drop off a load for me?’” Hornewer said.

A new approach to accurately predict cellular reprogramming cocktails

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, life extension

Aging is a complex process that can lead to chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, muscular degeneration, atherosclerosis and neurodegeneration, and it is currently one of the major scientific concerns in the field of medicine [1].

Several strategies have been developed to date for the promotion of healthy aging and an increase in the duration of life. One of the recent strategies that can decrease the deleterious impact of aging and increase the regenerative property at the cellular level is cellular reprogramming.

Cellular reprogramming can convert a somatic cell into an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC). It not only helps to restore tissue and organ function but also helps to determine cell fate. This, in turn, helps in the maintenance of cellular identity through the expression of cell type-specific genes and suppression of lineage-inappropriate genes [2].

Canon on cusp of nanoimprint chip-making revolution

Posted by in categories: computing, nanotechnology

Canon is moving ahead with a plan to build a new factory in Japan to double the production of its semiconductor lithography equipment.

The planned facility will produce both the standard KrF and i-line machines that constitute the bulk of the division’s sales and the nanoimprint tools that Canon hopes will open a new era in semiconductor manufacturing.

Addressing investors after the announcement of third-quarter results in late October, Canon’s management referred to “our leading-edge nanoimprint lithography equipment.”
