Towards defect engineering: Identifying universal structures on the atomic scale

Posted by in categories: computing, engineering

How will materials behave under certain conditions? And how to make materials more robust? These two questions are crucial to design advanced materials for structural and functional components and applications. A close look at the underlying atomic structures and especially their defects is necessary to understand and predict material behavior.

Electrical conductivity, strength and fracture resistance are for example influenced by grain boundaries. It is known that grain boundaries—despite being defects—have their own ordered , which can influence or even dominate . However, their requires precise and time-consuming atomic resolution imaging and is limited to the investigation of specific, individual cases.

But are these cases generalizable for all metals? A researcher team of the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE) utilized to show that the same atomic arrangements occur in a whole group of metals, namely fcc metals, thus proving that the “special cases” investigated in the experiments are not really exotic, but common.

7 new spider species found in the depths of Israeli caves

Posted by in categories: evolution, genetics

A new study has identified seven spider species previously unknown to science in the depths of Israeli caves, with the surprise finding that they are evolutionarily closer to arachnids found in southern Europe than to their neighbors at cave entrances in Israel.

The peer-reviewed research, published in the Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution journal, was conducted by scientists from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the University of Madison-Wisconsin.

The study “has extensive scientific implications for uncovering the evolution of speciation in caves and the historical, geographic and climatic processes that occurred in Israel,” the Hebrew University said in a statement.

Qualcomm takes wraps off world’s first advanced-ready 5G modem-RF chip

Posted by in categories: business, mobile phones, robotics/AI

On Wednesday, Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) unveiled the semiconductor industry’s first advanced-ready 5G modem-RF chip that can be used not only in smartphones, but mixed reality headsets, 5G networks and other areas.

Led by CEO Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm (QCOM) said the Snapdragon X75 5G Modem-RF chip utilizes artificial intelligence thats two-and-a-half times faster than previous AI used and better software to bring faster connections to devices, while also allowing them to get better signal strength, data speed and coverage.

Qualcomm (QCOM) added that the chips can also be used in vehicles, an increasing component of the company’s business, as well as PCs, factories and fixed wireless access networks.

Chat GPT on Extending Healthy Lifespan and Epigenetic Cellular Rejuvenation.pdf

Posted by in categories: computing, genetics, life extension

I wanted to test how well endowed is ChatGPT in the field of Longevity. For that matter I asked the following two questions: Which are the most promising therapies which are being developed to significantly extend healthy lifespan in humans using 4,000 characters (about maximum lenght to be readable in one page).

Which are the most promising therapies to achieve epigenetic cellular rejuvenation.

I created a two-page document in PDF with a screenshot of the responses for the two questions, so to show them exactly as they appeared in my laptop (no editing by me whatsoever).

Scientists are making machines, wearable and implantable, to act as kidneys

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, chemistry, nanotechnology, wearables

“It doesn’t have just a static function. It has a bank of sensors that measure chemicals in the blood and feeds that information back to the device,” Kurtz says.

Other startups are getting in on the game. Nephria Bio, a spinout from the South Korean-based EOFlow, is working to develop a wearable dialysis device, akin to an insulin pump, that uses miniature cartridges with nanomaterial filters to clean blood (Harhay is a scientific advisor to Nephria). Ian Welsford, Nephria’s co-founder and CTO, says that the device’s design means that it can also be used to treat acute kidney injuries in resource-limited settings. These potentials have garnered interest and investment in artificial kidneys from the U.S. Department of Defense.

For his part, Burton is most interested in an implantable device, as that would give him the most freedom. Even having a regular outpatient procedure to change batteries or filters would be a minor inconvenience to him.

Microsoft says Bing can be provoked to respond outside of its ‘designed tone’

Posted by in category: robotics/AI

Microsoft has acknowledged reports of Bing’s strange responses to some queries over the past week since the launch of the updated search engine. Some users have reported receiving rude, manipulative and unnerving responses from the AI-boosted Bing. In a new blog post, Microsoft said it’s listening to feedback from users about their concerns about the tone of Bing’s responses.

The company says it didn’t envision Bing being used for “general discovery of the world” or for social entertainment. Microsoft found that in extended sessions of 15 or more questions, Bing can become repetitive or be provoked to give responses that are not necessarily helpful or “in line with its designed tone.” The company notes that long chat sessions can confuse the model on what questions it’s answering. Microsoft says it thinks it may need to add a tool so users can more easily refresh the context or start from scratch.

Microsoft also notes that “the model at times tries to respond or reflect in the tone in which it is being asked to provide responses that can lead to a style we didn’t intend. This is a non-trivial scenario that requires a lot of prompting so most of you won’t run into it, but we are looking at how to give you more fine-tuned control.”

The Problematic Nature Of Generative AI

Posted by in categories: drones, ethics, robotics/AI

Resist the temptation to take credit for patchwork combinations of other people’s work. If you’re great, prove it by articulating unique ideas in unique ways. Never before has there been a better opportunity for ambitious thinkers to achieve greatness. When others are creating and consuming synthetically generated content like flying drones in a perpetual hover state, there’s an opportunity for non-drones to fly higher, farther and faster.

For example, students manipulating the system by having ChatGPT write essays miss an opportunity to learn, demonstrate a dangerously poor understanding of ethics and prove they’re no better than everyone else. Students who learn on their own, articulate original ideas and share a passion for a subject will outperform the machines by an increasingly wide margin.

The future of humans is a fusion of what machines and people do best. What can be predicted or regurgitated should be left to machines, but what requires judgment or rational thinking should be left to us. Generative AI isn’t a crutch, it’s not a panacea, and it’s not a threat to humans. We’re the only species capable of synthesizing ideas, forming opinions and making decisions based on ethical principles. Let’s use this moment in history to embrace the future while investing in our humanity.
