Posted by in category: biotech/medical

The doctors explain it as a rare case of foreign accent syndrome.

A man suffering from prostate cancer started sporting an Irish accent in what is one of the few documented reports of the condition and the first ever associated with this type of cancer. Sadly, the man ultimately passed away from his disease.

Github To Layoff 10% Of Global Workforce In Latest Tech Cuts

Posted by in category: computing

So for those workers who have managed to hold on to their jobs, their working conditions are likely to get a little worse. For one, Github has announced that they’ll be switching to Microsoft Teams for their videoconferencing, and moving their laptop refresh schedule up to four years from the current three.

Could be worse, obviously, but still.

CEO Thomas Dohmke sent out an email to Github staff saying that “Although our entire leadership team has carefully deliberated this step and come to agreement, ultimately, as CEO the decision is mine. I recognize this will be difficult on you all, and we will approach this period with the utmost respect for every Hubber.”

Amazon in talks to buy Indian video giant MX Player

Posted by in category: internet

Amazon is engaging with Times Internet to explore the acquisition of MX Player, one of the largest on-demand video streaming services in India, according to four sources familiar with the matter, as the American e-commerce group eyes expanding its entertainment ambitions in the key overseas market.

The deliberations are ongoing and may not materialize into a deal, three sources cautioned. The terms of the deal are yet to be finalized. Times Internet and Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Sources requested anonymity discussing private matters.

At least two more players — including Zee-Sony — have expressed interest in acquiring the Times Internet-owned app, two sources said.

Cathie Wood Has an Alarming Prediction Regarding Amazon’s Robot: Human Ratio

Posted by in category: robotics/AI

With ChatGPT all over the news and more companies turning to various forms of automation to make their operations run more smoothly, it’s understandable that those who fear their jobs could be replaced by robots are feeling some anxiety lately.

Naturally, the companies fastest to embrace this technology are those that can afford it. Amazon announced the introduction of fully autonomous robots into its warehouses in June 2022. But the company has been using robotics since 2012, when it acquired order fulfillment company Kiva Systems for $775 million.

Harnessing the power of GPT-3 in scientific research

Posted by in category: security

Check out all the on-demand sessions from the Intelligent Security Summit here.

Since its launch in 2020, Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) has been the talk of the town. The powerful large language model (LLM) trained on 45 TB of text data has been used to develop new tools across the spectrum — from getting code suggestions and building websites to performing meaning-driven searches. The best part? You just have to enter commands in plain language.

GPT-3’s emergence has also heralded a new era in scientific research. Since the LLM can process vast amounts of information quickly and accurately, it has opened up a wide range of possibilities for researchers: generating hypotheses, extracting information from large datasets, detecting patterns, simplifying literature searches, aiding the learning process and much more.

Autofluorescence-free, imaging-guided precision therapy for rheumatoid arthritis

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, life extension, nanotechnology

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), known as “immortal cancer,” is a chronic, progressive autoimmune inflammatory disease. The development and application of an RA high-sensitivity theranostics probe can help to accurately monitor the progression and realize the efficient treatment of RA.

In a study published in Advanced Science, a research group led by Prof. Zhang Yun from Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter of the Chinese Academy of Sciences developed a dual-triggered theranostics based on persistent luminescence nanoparticles (PLNPs) for RA autofluorescence-free imaging-guided precise treatment and therapeutic evaluation.

The researchers first prepared a renewable near-infrared (NIR)-emitting Zn1.3 Ga1.4 Sn0.3 O4:0.5%Cr3+, 0.3%Y3+ (ZGSO) PLNPs by a facile mesoporous silica template method.
