M-Theory: When tech takes us back to the future

Tech prefers to be forward-facing. Like, obsessively so. What’s new? What’s next? We don’t even like to analyze and maintain what we’ve already made, let alone spend any time really looking back. After all, the interesting problems have already been solved… and where’s the money in it?

We can actually do both, and use the progress of technology to do a great service to the past. Bringing clarity, identity, context and even solving mysteries. Still usually no money in it, though.

Confirmed 34 People Missing, 5 Rescued in Diving Boat Fire

The U.S. Coast Guard stated in a press conference 34 people are missing or unaccounted as search and rescue recovery efforts are currently underway.

There was a total of 39 people on board with 34 people sleeping below deck and 5 crew members. The Coast Guard confirmed the five crew members were awake at the time of the fire and jumped from the boat before being rescued by a Good Samaritan vessel named Grape Escape.

The Coast Guard confirmed the Conception boat was anchored 20 yards off Platt’s Harbor on the northside of Santa Cruz island. The shoreline of the island is being searched for any survivors.

True North to align with Magnetic North at Greenwich for first time in 360 years

Anyone who has ever stood on the Prime Meridian line at the Royal Observatory at Greenwich in London holding a compass will know that True North and Magnetic North do not align.

Earth’s wandering magnetism means that the magnetic North Pole is constantly shifting, sending metal compass needles darting away from the geographical North Pole — a problem that requires hikers to make continual adjustments when navigating by map.

But next month, for the first time 360 years, True North and Magnetic North will line up.
