Parallel universes exist and we will soon explore them, physicist says
Posted by Paul Battista in categories: cosmology, particle physics, quantum physics
At a quantum level, the vanishingly tiny particles that make up the building blocks of everything don’t even have a set location, just a smear of possible positions dictated by complex rules of probability.
And theoretical physicist Sean Carroll is entirely happy with that. He says that the fact that tiny particles like electrons and photons don’t have one set place in the universe is evidence that there are many parallel universes.

Boeing Is Losing The New Space Race To SpaceX
Posted by Roderick Reilly in categories: robotics/AI, space travel
Boeing, an important player in the US space program for decades, hopes that its Starliner manned spacecraft will deliver astronauts to the International Space Station and the moon.
A software issue that prevented an unmanned test capsule from docking with the space station caused NASA to launch a review; preliminary results highlight serious safety concerns.
Boeing may have to attempt another test launch to meet the requirements of NASA’s Commercial Crew Development Program, which would cost it $410 million.

Kaboom! Astronomers detect the universe’s biggest explosion since the Big Bang
Posted by Roderick Reilly in category: cosmology
Scientists have discovered the biggest explosion seen in the universe since the Big Bang, a new study reports. The explosion took place at the center of a galaxy that’s about 390 million light years from Earth.
“We’ve seen outbursts in the centers of galaxies before, but this one is really, really massive,” said study co-author Melanie Johnston-Hollitt of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research, in a statement. “And we don’t know why it’s so big.”
She added that the explosion happened very slowly, taking place over hundreds of millions of years. It also released five times more energy than the previous record holder.

King County patient first to die in US from coronavirus

Wuhan Coronavirus Pandemic — Washington state: 1 death and 1 community spread case and 1 travel case.
“One case involves a teenager in Everett with no travel history. He is a presumptive positive, meaning tests have come back positive for the virus, while pending confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He is currently in home isolation. Health officials don’t know how or where the teenager was infected, and are working on identifying anyone the teen may have come into contact with. The student attends Jackson High School in the Everett School District.
The second case involves a King County woman in her 50s who recently traveled to Daegu, South Korea. Her status is also presumptive positive and she is in home isolation.”

‘Guardian angel gene’ key to avoiding premature births
Posted by Quinn Sena in categories: biotech/medical, genetics
Removal of an essential gene was a major contributor to preterm labor, according to recent research.
Researchers from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center started with a pathway linked to the tumor suppressor gene known as transformation-related protein 53 (Trp53), which encodes another protein: p53. Mutations of Trp53 are found in a variety of cancers, but the gene’s function in female reproduction and other normal physiological processes is not well understood. The role of p53, sometimes referred to as the “guardian angel gene,” is to help preserve genetic stability and prevent mutation.
The researchers targeted certain signaling pathways that function both in pregnancy and during the formation of cancerous tumors. During pregnancy, the pathways are usually tightly regulated. In tumor development, however, they can become dysfunctional.

This MIT Scientist Is Building Batteries Using Modified Viruses

Going Green
Experts told Wired that the technique could eventually be used to extend a battery’s charge and discharge rate by forcing the millions of viruses to create a highly ordered electrode structure, with shortcuts for ions moving through electrodes.
“Something my lab is completely focused on now is trying to get the cleanest technology,” Belcher told the magazine.
