New Lantern Is Better Than Solar and Can Be Charged

Posted by in categories: energy, sustainability

Colombian renewable energy startup E-Dina developed a wireless lantern, called WaterLight, that converts salt water into electricity and is more reliable than solar-powered lamps, a Dezeen article explains. And it can also be charged by urine in emergency situations.

The portable device acts as a mini generator that produces light using ionization — by filling it with 500 milliliters of seawater, the salt in the water reacts with magnesium and copper plates inside the device, converting it into electrical energy.

Researchers develop all-optical approach to pumping chip-based nanolasers

Posted by in categories: computing, information science, internet

Researchers have developed a new all-optical method for driving multiple highly dense nanolaser arrays. The approach could enable chip-based optical communication links that process and move data faster than today’s electronic-based devices.

“The development of optical interconnects equipped with high-density nanolasers would improve information processing in the that move information across the internet,” said research team leader Myung-Ki Kim from Korea University.

“This could allow streaming of ultra-high-definition movies, enable larger-scale interactive online encounters and games, accelerate the expansion of the Internet of Things and provide the fast connectivity needed for big data analytics.”

Tesla launches ‘Tesla Electric’ to become an electricity retailer

Posted by in category: energy

Tesla has launched “Tesla Electric” to become an electricity retailer through its Powerwall owners – starting with some markets in Texas.

After gaining experience through its virtual power plants (VPPs), Tesla is taking things a step further with the launch of “Tesla Electric.”

Instead of reacting to specific “events” and providing services to your local electric utilities, like Tesla Powerwall owners have done in VPPs in California, Tesla Electric is actively and automatically buying and selling electricity for Tesla Powerwall owners – providing a buffer against peak prices.

Exclusive: ChatGPT owner OpenAI projects $1 billion in revenue by 2024

Posted by in categories: finance, robotics/AI

The forecast, first reported by Reuters, represents how some in Silicon Valley are betting the underlying technology will go far beyond splashy and sometimes flawed public demos.

OpenAI was most recently valued at $20 billion in a secondary share sale, one of the sources said. The startup has already inspired rivals and companies building applications atop its generative AI software, which includes the image maker DALL-E 2. OpenAI charges developers licensing its technology about a penny or a little more to generate 20,000 words of text, and about 2 cents to create an image from a written prompt, according to its website.

A spokesperson for OpenAI declined to comment on its financials and strategy. The company, which started releasing commercial products in 2020, has said its mission remains advancing AI safely for humanity.

Scientists Reveal 3 Keys to Keeping Your Brain Healthy

Posted by in categories: electronics, neuroscience

No surprises, but confirmation that what we think we should do actually does make a difference. Your brain is really rather amazing. Around 100 billion nerve cells collaborate to keep you nimble and quick-thinking. However, like with the rest of the body, as you age your brain may not be nearly as sharp. You may need to write things down, miss appointments, or have trouble watching TV without straining to understand the dialogue or action.
