Scientists accidentally discovered a giant ring-shaped cosmic megastructure that challenges our understanding of the Universe
Posted by Genevieve Klien in category: space
Scientists have discovered a massive ring-shaped structure in space that challenges our understanding of the universe.
The cosmic megastructure, dubbed the Big Ring, has a diameter of about 1.3 billion light-years and is among the largest structures ever observed. It appears to be roughly the size of 15 moons in the night sky as seen from Earth.
The Big Ring is so large that it challenges the cosmological principle. This fundamental cosmological assumption says that the universe is homogeneous on a large scale and looks the same in all directions.
A new book by NASA astronaut Tom Jones shares intriguing stories about the agency’s longest-running space exploration program.

Indonesia’s Marapi volcano erupts again, a month after deadly incident
Posted by Genevieve Klien in category: futurism
AGAM, Indonesia, Jan 14 (Reuters) — Indonesia’s Marapi volcano erupted on Sunday, with ash rising 1,300 metres (4,300 feet) from the peak six weeks month after a fatal eruption, according to the country’s geological agency.
The volcano in West Sumatra province erupted at least twice by 337 GMT on Sunday, the agency said, urging the evacuation of people within 4.5 km (2.8 miles) of the centre of the eruption, with the possibility of lava flows in rivers and valleys.
“In case there’s a rain of ash, we urge residents to also use masks in order to prevent respiratory illness,” the agency said.

Artificial intelligence comes to farming in India | BBC News
Posted by Raphael Ramos in categories: food, health, robotics/AI
India has used traditional methods of agriculture for generations, but with 1.4 billion people now dependant on the crops farmers produce, some are turning to technology to boost productivity and profit.
For example on one vineyard, sensor devices are being used to check weather and soil health.
