Microsoft’s AI-powered Bing Chat is coming to mobile browsers

Posted by in category: futurism

Microsoft first launched Bing Chat six months ago, and the company says it has “seen nine consecutive quarters of growth on Edge,” most likely thanks to the fact Microsoft had locked Bing Chat to its own browser. There have also been over 1 billion chats on Bing Chat and over 750 million images generated using the service.

Windows Copilot, powered by Bing Chat, is also coming to Windows 11 soon. Microsoft is currently testing this sidebar in builds of Windows 11, and it’s looking like it will likely roll out to all Windows 11 users later this year.

Whale of a whale may be biggest animal ever

Posted by in category: futurism

A massive extinct whale may have just stolen the title of biggest animal ever. According to a paper published today in, the creature—dubbed Perucetus colossus—could have weighed as much as 340 tons—nearly 75% more than the largest blue whales, the all-time record holder. That estimate comes from a 39-million-year-old partial skeleton unearthed in Peru. Even if the calculation turns out to be an overestimate, the animal was clearly huge, experts tell. The rotund giant would likely have been too sluggish to chase small but abundant critters like krill, the researchers say. Instead, its manateelike proportions (above in artist’s reconstruction) suggest it fed on the sea floor—though without a skull to examine, whether it was similarly vegetarian or preferred a more carnivorous diet remains a mystery.

What Makes Work Meaningful?

Posted by in category: futurism

How do you make your work more meaningful? Prior studies have focused on understanding the factors that contribute to making work meaningful overall, such as having more autonomy or being able to job craft. But these are individual actions that don’t easily translate into how we experience meaningfulness every day. It can also be difficult for early career professionals as you can’t just decide to drop every uninspiring task from your to-do list in an attempt to experience more meaning in your role. Research shows that being in a state of awareness can help. In a state of awareness (of yourself and your wider work environment), people are more willing and able to be creative in how they think and deal with challenges and other work-related problems. Awareness also helps you come up with better solutions, interpret signals from others around you, and adapt to changing circumstances.

There’s a lot of angst about software developers “losing their jobs” to AI, being replaced by a more intelligent version of ChatGPT, GitHub’s Copilot, Google’s foundation model Codey, or something similar.

AI startup founder Matt Welsh has been talking and writing about the end of programming. He’s asking whether large language models (LLMs) eliminate programming as we know it, and he’s excited that the answer is “yes”: Eventually, if not in the immediate future.

Navigators of Nature: Butterflies Exhibit Spatial Learning

Posted by in category: futurism

Summary: Researchers discovered Heliconius butterflies exhibit spatial learning, marking the first experimental proof of such abilities in any butterfly or moth species. The study suggests these butterflies can learn spatial information on large scales, important for their long-range foraging behavior known as traplining.

Until now, research on insect spatial learning primarily focused on social species like bees and ants.

This new revelation underscores the possibility of more widespread complex learning skills, such as the use of spatial information, in insects than previously recognized.
