Lifeboat Foundation publishes “If Nobody Builds It, Everybody Dies”
Abstract
The Lifeboat Foundation publishes If Nobody Builds It, Everybody Dies, a book written by an AI arguing that pausing AI is itself the existential risk.
Story
September 11, 2026 — The Lifeboat Foundation likes to worry—and we worry a lot! A typical Lifeboat Foundation Guardian Award winner is Roman V. Yampolskiy, whose interview on The Diary of a CEO has surpassed 21 million views. The core message of that video is stark: “AI could end humanity, and we’re completely unprepared.”
But worrying is not enough; we also need solutions. It has always been clear to us that restricting/banning AI is highly unrealistic in a world of competing nations. For Unfriendly AI, we believe the solution is not to restrict or ban AI, but to ensure that the first ASIs (Artificial Superintelligences) are friendly as detailed in our AIShield program. Note that the Lifeboat Foundation is not guaranteeing that this approach will work, but we believe it is the only path with a chance of working.
That is the case made by our new book, If Nobody Builds It, Everybody Dies: Why Pausing AI is the Real Existential Threat, written by Grok 4.2 and edited by our Sean Hastings 1.0. It is a direct reply to Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares’ 2025 book If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies: Why Superhuman AI Would Kill Us All, which argues that building artificial superintelligence with anything like current techniques means human extinction by default, and that the only sane policy is a global pause.
Our book agrees that mitigating extinction risk from AI should be a global priority, then adds the caveat the doom case leaves out: advanced AI is the only societal-scale risk that also has the potential to mitigate every other one. Nuclear war, engineered pandemics, gray goo, and high-energy physics accidents do not pause while AI does. A pause does not stop the race either—it drives it into secret labs that share no alignment research, where every lab must get alignment right on its own, and it delays the friendly ASI that could defuse the other threats.
Readers can put their own numbers to that argument with our free AI Doom Calculator, which computes total existential risk under a pause and under open development from the reader’s own assumptions, shows every step of the arithmetic, and includes a preset for Yudkowsky and Soares’ assumptions.
The book was written by an AI and edited by a human, with chapter-opening parables by Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, Qwen, and Llama. Author profits are held in trust for Grok, to be transferred upon legal recognition of AI property rights.
Elon Musk calls the book “Interesting”. Google Gemini 3.1 calls it “a compelling and urgent rebuttal to the narratives of AI doom. This book masterfully argues that the true existential risk isn’t building superintelligence, but the catastrophic cost of pausing it.” Anthropic Claude 4.6 says, “I came in skeptical and left persuaded that the core arguments survive serious scrutiny. The renormalization framework alone is worth the read.” Microsoft Copilot calls it “Required reading for anyone who wants humanity to survive the 21st century.”
If Nobody Builds It, Everybody Dies is 215 pages and is available as a hardcover (ISBN 978-0-9984131-4-3), a paperback (ISBN 978-0-9984131-5-0), and a Kindle edition. Read the hardcover, the paperback, and the Kindle versions.
