Vít Jedlička, M.A.
Vít Jedlička, M.A. is President and Founder of the Free Republic of Liberland and Chairman of the Czech voluntary association Reformy.cz, with over a decade of experience in libertarian activism and political entrepreneurship. He is a Czech right-wing libertarian politician, publicist, and activist who has transformed political philosophy into practical application by establishing the world’s first blockchain-governed micronation.
Vít is known for pioneering the integration of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology into national governance, making Liberland the first nation to formally adopt Bitcoin as its official currency and conduct elections entirely through blockchain technology.
As President of Liberland since its founding on April 13, 2015, Vít has led the development of a 7-square-kilometer sovereign state located between Croatia and Serbia on previously unclaimed territory. Under his leadership, Liberland has attracted over 735,000 citizenship applications and registered 1,200 citizens who have paid up to $10,000 for Liberlandian passports.
The nation successfully conducted its first blockchain-based Congress election on October 5, 2024, demonstrating the practical implementation of decentralized governance. Vít has been instrumental in designing the voting system for the Liberland Smart Chain, the public blockchain on which the Liberland government runs its online presence. Vít founded and has chaired Reformy.cz since 2011, a libertarian educational NGO whose video channels have accumulated over 18 million views. This community news service of libertarian roots has become a significant platform for spreading free-market ideas and political education in the Czech Republic.
Through Reformy.cz, Vít has created one of the most influential libertarian media platforms in Central Europe, demonstrating his commitment to educational outreach and ideological advocacy. As a political figure in Czech politics, he served as the first Regional Chairman of the Free Citizens Party (Svobodní) in the Hradec Králové Region from 2009 to 2014, becoming a founding member of this Czech Libertarian party.
Vít’s entrepreneurial background includes serving as Managing Director of HKfree.org from 2006 to 2009, a civic network and internet service provider in Hradec Králové. His professional experience spans sales, management, financial analysis, and IT, providing him with a diverse skill set that he has applied to both his political activism and the practical challenges of nation-building.
His work has gained international recognition, with features in major media outlets including The New York Times, CNN, Time, Vice, and numerous international conferences. Vít’s political philosophy is deeply influenced by classical liberal thinkers including Frédéric Bastiat, Ludwig von Mises, Murray Rothbard, and Ron Paul. He describes himself as a Bastiat-influenced anarcho-capitalist who advocates for minimal government intervention, laissez-faire capitalism, and individual liberty.
His Eurosceptic views and criticism of the European Union’s democratic deficit have positioned him as a prominent voice in the libertarian movement. He founded Liberland specifically to demonstrate that libertarian and free-market concepts can work in the real world, creating what he calls “a model of how a minarchist state built on classical liberal values should look like.”
In his diplomatic efforts, Vít has established connections with various international figures and organizations. He has met with Croatian President Zoran Milanović and pursued recognition from multiple nations. Liberland has developed closer relations with Argentina following the election of libertarian president Javier Milei, who had previously mentioned Liberland at a convention in 2019.
Vít has also engaged with other unrecognized states like Somaliland and received support from several micronations including the Kingdom of Enclava, the Kingdom of North Sudan, and the Principality of Sealand. Vít earned his Master’s degree in Political Science from CEVRO Institute in 2014, with his thesis concentrating on the dangers of ever-bigger government and its strangling influence on global free markets. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Affairs from the University of Economics, Prague in 2008, with his thesis focusing on central banking and monetary policy. His academic background provided the theoretical foundation for his later practical experiments in creating alternative governance structures.
Throughout his career, Vít has faced significant challenges, including being arrested by Croatian police in 2015 for attempting to access Liberland territory and being banned from entering Croatia for five years due to what authorities termed “extremist activities”. Despite these obstacles, he has continued to develop Liberland’s infrastructure, including establishing a fleet of boats for accessing the territory and developing plans for sustainable settlements.
His vision includes transforming Liberland into a hub for IT companies, financial institutions, and media companies attracted by absolute freedom of speech and minimal regulation. His father was removed from his office job at the Institute of Weights and Measures in Prague for resisting Communist Party membership and was forced to work as a mechanic.
During the 1997 Czech financial crisis, his family nearly went bankrupt when the Czech central bank raised interest rates to 25 percent, experiences that shaped his skepticism of government intervention and central banking.
