Jennifer Rodriguez-Mueller
Jennifer Rodriguez-Mueller is a machine-learning engineer at Google and the Founder and CEO of Aquahug Technologies, a biotechnology startup she launched in 2013. Her career moves across three technical worlds that rarely share a résumé — applied machine learning, cryptoeconomic protocol design, and molecular biology — reflecting a deliberately interdisciplinary path she began as an undergraduate intent on becoming a “cyberneticist”.
She works, in her own framing, at the meeting point of computation and the life sciences, with a recurring interest in the smallest molecular machines and in building systems that behave safely and predictably.
At Google, where she has been a software engineer since 2014, Jennifer develops machine-learning systems, work she distills to the goal of “friendlier, wiser predictions.” Her contributions include the semantic and search engineering behind Google’s job-search technology, an AI-powered suite that applies machine learning to match job seekers with relevant openings through intelligent search and commute-based filtering.
Her orientation is toward safety-minded, beneficial machine learning, and she has openly sought collaborators who pair strong mathematical ability with a security mindset. Alongside her engineering role she leads Aquahug Technologies as Founder and CEO, the vehicle for the “sideline in biotechnology startups” that has run in parallel to her software career.
Between 2018 and 2021 she served as Algorithmic Ethicist for protocol engineering at Orchid, the decentralized bandwidth and privacy marketplace, on a contract basis. There she worked at the intersection of mechanism design and applied cryptography — incentive-compatible mechanism design, zero-knowledge proofs, low-trust probabilistic micropayments, Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus, and smart-contract systems.
She is a credited coauthor of Orchid’s technical whitepaper, Orchid: A Decentralized Network Routing Market, which introduced the project’s probabilistic “nanopayment” mechanism for settling enormous volumes of micro-transactions off-chain on Ethereum.
Earlier in her career, from 2011 to 2013, Jennifer was a programmer and analyst at UC San Diego Health. Between 2008 and 2009 she worked as an analytics scientist at BrightScope, the retirement-plan data and analytics company later acquired by Strategic Insight in 2016 in a deal reported at roughly $35–40 million. From 2007 to 2008, she was a software engineer in analytics at Veoh, the online video-sharing company that competed with YouTube during the mid-2000s.
Jennifer’s scientific grounding is in molecular biology. Between 2005 and 2006, she worked as a bioinformaticist in Forest Rohwer’s marine virology laboratory at San Diego State University, the lab that pioneered the field of viromics and established that viruses are among the most biodiverse entities on Earth. Her fascination with viruses and bacteriophages — among the smallest self-replicating molecular machines in nature — grew out of a broader interest in nanoscale biological engineering.
She is a coauthor of Viral and microbial community dynamics in four aquatic environments, a widely cited 2010 study in The ISME Journal that demonstrated viral and microbial community composition remains largely predictable and stable across aquatic ecosystems despite theoretical expectations of chaotic turnover.
Jennifer earned a Bachelor of Arts in Analytic Philosophy from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2004, following a self-directed course of study that ranged across set theory, linguistics, complex-systems theory, neurophysiology, psychometrics, and artificial intelligence.
She completed her lower-division work at Santa Rosa Junior College, earning an Associate of Arts, an Associate of Science, and IGETC certification, with coursework spanning physics and rhetoric. She has credited intercollegiate policy debate under the Cross Examination Debate Association as among the most formative experiences of her early education.
Based in Belmont, California, Jennifer continues to work where machine learning meets the life sciences. She is an enthusiast of Foldit, the citizen-science protein-folding game, and has set her sights on cofounding a nanotechnology venture — structured as a public-benefit corporation or nonprofit — devoted to molecular engineering.
