Dr. Ivandro (Soares) Monteiro
Ivandro (Soares) Monteiro, Ph.D. is the Founder and CEO of EME Saúde, Clinical and Organizational Psychologist, and Associate Partner and Head of Behavioural Consultancy Unit at CROWE Portugal with over 24 years of experience in mental health and organizational psychology.
He is a University Professor at ICBAS – Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar at the University of Porto and the founder of STOICNET, Portugal’s first online mental health network based on Stoic philosophy. With more than 25,000 individual clinical sessions conducted since 2000, Ivandro has established himself as one of Portugal’s leading experts in psychotherapy and behavioral consultancy.
In January 2025, Ivandro launched STOICNET, an innovative online mental health platform that integrates Stoic philosophy with modern psychotherapy approaches. This network offers 100% online consultations with carefully selected professionals and promotes personal development through the “Clube dos Estóicos” (Stoics Club). The platform addresses Portugal’s mental health challenges by providing accessible, high-quality care to Portuguese-speaking communities worldwide. As founder and director, he has assembled a team of proactive mental health professionals, including psychologists, psychiatrists, and nutritionists who undergo rigorous selection processes.
Since June 2022, Ivandro has served as Associate Partner and Head of the Behavioural Consultancy Unit at CROWE Portugal, where he leads initiatives to assess, diagnose, and intervene on psychosocial risks in organizations. His work addresses the significant impact of psychological health issues, which result in 136 billion euros in annual productivity costs across Europe. In November 2024, he represented CROWE at the Mind Summit 2024 in São Paulo, where he engaged with international experts, including Martin Seligman, on mental health and workplace well-being.
As the founder and CEO of EME Saúde since 2011, Ivandro has built one of Porto’s premier medical and mental health clinics. The clinic operates in three business areas: medical and mental health services (both in-person and online), behavioral consultancy for corporate clients, and motivational speaking and corporate events. With a team of over 15 highly qualified professionals, EME Saúde provides specialized care in multiple languages, serving both national and international patients. The clinic’s growth led to the acquisition of custom facilities on Rua Júlio Dinis in August 2020.
Ivandro’s contributions to mental health literature include his bestselling book Mudamos pelo que Fazemos (We Change by What We Do), published in 2023 and already in its second edition. The book combines scientific knowledge with Stoic philosophy to promote individual responsibility and reduce victimization perspectives.
His earlier works include Depressão: Por que é que uns deprimem e outros não? (Depression: Why Do Some Get Depressed and Others Don’t?) published in 2012, and Ilusões de memória na depressão” (Memory Illusions in Depression) from 2006. He has conducted sold-out speaking tours across Portugal and international Portuguese communities, delivering over 1,000 attendees his transformative message about personal responsibility and change.
In 2006, Ivandro founded the API—Academia de Psicoterapia Interpessoal (Interpersonal Psychotherapy Academy), pioneering interpersonal psychotherapy training in Portugal. As a Level E-certified trainer and advisor recognized by the Interpersonal Psychotherapy Institute in the USA, he has trained hundreds of mental health professionals, including psychologists and psychiatrists. The academy received accreditation from the Portuguese Order of Psychologists for its Level A course in Interpersonal Psychotherapy in 2016. Under his leadership, API has hosted numerous international experts and organized landmark conferences in the field.
Ivandro earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Minho in 2010 with his dissertation titled Vulnerability to Depression: the contribution of family background, attachment and social support. He earned his Master’s Degree in Cognitive Sciences from the University of Minho in 2003, with a thesis on Memory illusions in Depression.
In 2005, he received a Certificate of Achievement in Counseling Psychology from the University of Memphis, USA. He completed his undergraduate degree (Licenciatura) in Psychology from the Universidade da Maia – UMAIA in 2000. His postgraduate education includes a Post-Graduation in Digital Economy from Atlântico Business School (2021), Business Administration from IPAM/ANJE (2012), and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from Instituto Superior Miguel Torga (2024).
Throughout his career, Ivandro has held numerous prestigious positions, including Senior Consultant at Lionbridge (2017-present) and VeraSci (2022–2025), where he served as a clinical consultant and rater for mental health research. From 2018 to 2020, he was Principal Clinician IR-IRev at MedAvante-ProPhase, evaluating psychiatric patients using standardized diagnostic scales.
His academic career includes serving as University Professor at ICBAS/UP since 2010, where he teaches in the Master of Legal Medicine program, and previous positions at private universities, including Instituto Superior da Maia (2001–2014).
Ivandro currently serves on several boards and advisory positions, including Member of the British-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (since 2019), Member of the International Society for Coaching Psychology (since 2018), and the International Society for Interpersonal Psychotherapy. He has been a frequent contributor to national media, including BOM DIA as a columnist since 2018, and has appeared on various Portuguese television and radio programs discussing mental health topics. His expertise has been recognized through numerous speaking engagements at international conferences and corporate events.
His innovative work has earned recognition, including being featured at major international events. In 2024, Ivandro was invited by the American Psychological Association to review and endorse the book Deliberate Practice in Interpersonal Psychotherapy. He has presented at venues ranging from corporate settings with Fortune 500 companies to academic conferences at leading universities. His speaking topics cover mental health, organizational behavior, leadership, and the integration of Stoic philosophy with modern psychology.
Ivandro lives in Porto, Portugal, where he continues his clinical practice and manages his various professional ventures. He is fluent in Portuguese and English and conducts consultations and presentations in both languages. His work philosophy centers on the principle that “life is not what happens to us, but above all, what we do with what happens to us” — a concept deeply rooted in scientific psychology and Stoic philosophy.
