Dr. Hieu T. Nguyen

Hieu T. Nguyen, Ph.D. is a Research Fellow and Lecturer at the Australian National University College of Engineering and Computer Science. He is known for his developments of various optical-based characterization techniques at The Australian National University (ANU). These developments could give manufacturers access to potential defects or unwanted features in everyday technology — such as mobile phones, batteries, and solar cells — more easily and much earlier in the fabrication process.

The invention works by capturing high-resolution images of semiconductor materials, including many potential defects, within seconds.

“It’s not just several times faster than techniques currently being used — it’s tens of thousands of times faster,” said Hieu.

In 2016, he earned his Ph.D. in engineering (photovoltaics) from the Australian National University (ANU). Hieu earned his bachelor degree in electrical engineering from Portland State University, Oregon in 2011.

From 2011 to early 2013, he was a product yield engineer at Intel where he received the Intel Global Test Manufacturing Group (TMG) Excellence award in 2012.

In 2017, he was a visiting scientist at the United States’ National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

His research interests include Luminescence spectroscopy and imaging, photovoltaics, defects and impurities in silicon, and optical and electrical characterization techniques for photovoltaic devices.

He has published 46 scientific peer-reviewed papers, delivered 10 international talks and seminars, and is an Associate Fellow of The Higher Education Academy, UK. He received CECS’s Dean Award for Excellence in Supervision in 2018.

He was awarded multiple grants, among others the Australian Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics (ACAP) Collaboration Grant, Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) R&D, and the ACAP Post-Doctoral Fellowship.
