Dr. David Whitehouse

David Whitehouse, Ph.D., FRAS is a Scientist, Writer, and Broadcaster. He is the Author of Apollo 11: The Inside Story, Space 2069, and The Alien Perspective, and also has Asteroid 4036 Whitehouse named after him.

David, a former astronomer, was a BBC Radio Science correspondent from 1988 to 2006. An internet pioneer since 1998, he also served as the Science Editor for BBC News Online. Since then he has been a critic of BBC science reporting. Read The BBC’s black hole baloney and Under the microscope.

David has written for phone lines, Teletext, newspapers, magazines, radio, TV, mobile phones, and online for which he has won many awards including European Internet Journalist of the Year. His many awards include a Glaxo for newspaper science writing and a record five Netmedia awards. He also won the first Arthur Award for Space Journalism, named after Arthur C Clarke. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and a past president of the Society for Popular Astronomy.

David earned his Ph.D. in Astrophysics in 1983 from the world-famous Jodrell Bank at The Victoria University of Manchester with his thesis titled Radio observations of flare stars.

Before joining the BBC, he was Space Scientist and Astronomer at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, University College London, and at the Jodrell Bank Radio Observatory. He has been a consultant to many space agencies and involved in many space missions.

He has an asteroid 4036 – 4036 Whitehouse – renamed after him and in 2019 a message from him was bounced off the Moon. He has met and interviewed many involved in the space business including everyone who has been to the Moon. He appears more than anyone in the British media talking about space. For over 40 years he has made more broadcasts than anyone else, ever.

David is in the Academic Advisory Council of The Global Warming Policy Foundation and is Science Editor at Net Zero Watch, highlighting the serious implications of expensive and poorly considered climate change policies. As an Author, David has published several books about space, planets, and astronomy. He is the Author of 7 best-selling books including the acclaimed Apollo 11 – The Inside Story and Space 2069.

In his book The Alien Perspective, published in 2022, David takes us on a journey through the evolving cosmos as he considers humankind’s place in the universe – and how our survival depends on otherworldly perspectives. In 2016, he also published Into the Heart of Our World, A Journey to the Center of the Earth.

David also authored The Sun: A Biography, The Moon: A Biography, One Small Step. and Galileo: Renaissance Genius.

He has won numerous awards:

  • Apollo 11: The Inside Story shortlisted for the History of Science Hughes Prize. (2021)
  • Asteroid 4036 was renamed Asteroid Whitehouse for outstanding contributions to science and the media. (2006)
  • Winner of the inaugural Arthur C Clarke Award for outstanding and inspirational space reporting, also nominated were Patrick Moore and Reg Turnhill. (2005)
  • 2003 Netmedia Awards. Winner of Best Story in Any Category Broken on the Web and Winner of European Internet Journalist of the Year.
