CentOS 8 Comes to!

Building on scripts created by the great Chris Haley, we have now upgraded our main machine from CentOS 6 to CentOS 8. CentOS is a version of Linux, the world’s most popular operating system which runs on everything from Android smartphones to supercomputers.
Besides increasing our security, our software is now running much faster than before with blog posts being generated 10 times as fast and our workload has been reduced by 5 times. As a side benefit, also changed us from an Intel chip to an AMD chip that is 25% faster than the Intel chip. (In each case we were assigned just 6 of the many cores of the chip we are running on.) Intel no longer makes the fastest CPUs and is slowly switching to AMD chips instead.
Our various support machines are all currently running CentOS 7. (Our older main machine fell behind them because it is very difficult to upgrade our main machine which is running a lot of programs.) Our next big upgrade will be to upgrade our support machines to CentOS 9 in a few years. Finally, when we mention “machines”, we are really talking about virtual instances in the cloud where we rent some of the cores, memory, and disk space of large servers.
