Dr. Susan Ip-Jewell

Susan Ip-Jewell, MD, DCEG is the CEO and President at MMAARS and CIO and Cofounder at AvatarMEDIC. She is a Space Medicine Physician-Scientist, Analog Astronaut, Exponential Technologist, and Entrepreneur.

Susan was appointed as an official Space Coach for AFWERK empowered by US Space Force and US Air Force. Her research focuses on space medicine, health, wellness, human factors, and exponential technologies.

As the CEO and Cofounder at MMAARS, (Mars-Moon Astronautics Academy & Research Science) since 2017, Susan trains commercial analog astronauts and is developing the first Mars-Moon Settlement training facility in Mojave Desert (close to Mojave Spaceport) in California, USA. Formerly known as Mars Academy USA, MMAARS is offering fully immersive experiences in analog missions monthly where selected crews live, work, and conduct R&D in remote, Isolated and Confined Environments (I.C.E), integrating experiential learning with exponential technologies.

In 2019, Susan Cofounded AvatarMEDIC, an organization with a mission to leverage the convergence of Artificial General Intelligence, Blockchain, Augmented Reality, and Mixed Reality, to create an integrated system to address the challenges in the fields of emergency medicine, telemedicine, telerobotics, disaster relief, medical triage, and remote search and rescues. The company is an official team in the $10 Million ANA Avatar XPRIZE.

In February 2020, Susan cofounded myChainOmics. This company offers a Direct Connection between Anonymized Patient Data & Compensation for theValue of Medical Research using Blockchain and Machine Learning. This is a solution for incentivizing and democratizing drug discovery and clinical research using exponential technologies and decentralized information to maintain the integrity and ensure confidentiality and privacy.

Susan pioneered the first Mars Station-to-Station MARS MEDICS training missions with MAU-MDRS Crew 001, commanded missions from low-to high-fidelity locations under the NEAMAE PROJECT (Nepal, Everest, Antarctica, Africa, Americas Mars Analog Astronaut Exploration Expeditions).

Since 2014, Susan has been Chief Executive Officer at the Space Surgery Institute. SSI consists of an international, interdisciplinary multicultural team of space physicians, scientists, researchers, engineers, and professionals involved in space development, exploration, medicine, and research. They are pioneering space medicine and space surgery with a focus on training analog astronauts in full immersive simulations in remote and isolated extreme environments. With the help of telesurgery-teleanesthesia, 3D Printing technology, 3D Virtual Reality, tele-robotics, and operational procedures and protocols for human space missions.

In 2013, she became the cofounder of Mars Without Border (MWOB). This entity was formed to select and create scientific expedition teams for isolated analog environments from an international, interdisciplinary, and intercultural group of highly qualified pool of scientists, researchers, space artisans, and analog astronauts with backgrounds in the physical and life sciences, engineering, medicine, humanities, and creative arts.

Before, she was Teaching Fellow on Mars Colonization Stream at Exosphere Academy until 2017. Between 2006 and 2012, Susan was the CEO and Founder at The Clinic, a Wellness & Telemedicine Center in LA.

Since 2013, Susan has been volunteering at the Mars Desert Research Station for The Mars Society where she does research and upgrades on the Station’s Habitat and Green Habitat.

Susan has been invited to many international space summits and conferences, including Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA), Interstellar Starship Congress, 2017 Next Gen Suborbital Research Conference, 2017 New Worlds Conference, and Mars Society Convention 2017.

Susan graduated from Founder Institute (FI) Silicon Valley 2020 and from Draper University Accelerator programs in 2020. She is a veteran analog astronaut, and Commander of crews deployed to austere, remote Isolated and Confined Environments (I.C.E.). She graduated from International Space University (ISU) in 2014 on Space Studies Program (SSP14) with Aerospace & Space Medicine and Human Factors and was a recipient of a Google Scholarship to attend Singularity University’s (GSP15) in 2015.

Susan is the recipient of the Marie Marvingt Award 2015 in “Technologies and Innovations for Space” by the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA) recognizing visionaries in space exploration. She is also a recipient of the National Space Society (NSS) “Living in Space” Award for pioneering future space innovations and enabling the development of Martian and Lunar settlements.

Susan earned her Bachelor’s Degree of Science in the UK from Aston University and the UK Ross University School of Medicine. She received clinical training and a fellowship in Clinical Cancer Therapeutics and Molecular Medicine at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) within the National Institute of Health (NIH) in 2003 and at the UCLA Department of Clinical and Molecular Pharmacology. In 2013, she graduated from the Principles of Aviation and Space Medicine program at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and in 2016 she was certified as Space Crew Trainer and Space Educator from the US Space and Rocket Center.

She is currently studying Aerospace / Space Medicine and obtaining her certifications in Biomedical Engineering at UC Berkeley / Laney College and nanotechnology at Harvard Extension School. She is a candidate in MSc/PhD, Space Physiology and Health at Center for Human and Aerospace Physiological Sciences, School of Biomedical Sciences, King’s College London UK.

In 2020 Susan received a knighthood and was appointed as Dame Commander in the Order of the Eagle of the Kingdom of Georgia from the Royal House of Georgia.

She is a member of the Aerospace Medical Association, Aerospace Human Factors Association, Space Generation Advisory Council, and Space Medicine Association.
