Richard H. Smith, M.S. is Principal at Understanding the Future.
 
Richard has spent over twenty years working with scientists and engineers in high technology areas (medicine, telecom, nanotechnology) to bring ideas to the market. He has experience in every phase of product and market development — from raw insight through market research, product development, manufacturing planning, and marketing — including company formation.
 
His current focus areas are nanotechnology for (1) rapid medical diagnostics and (2) water purification and desalination. He speaks frequently on how nanotechnology will/can impact product and market development for various industries from healthcare to food to space. He has an extensive network of government, Fortune 100, and international contacts.
 
Richard was previously CEO at Flexible Medical Systems, Principal at Nanoverse, LLC, Director at Global Forum on Technology Foresight at Coates and Jarratt, Director at Planning and Research Administration at Georgetown University Medical School, and Director of Systems Marketing at Sony Corporation of America.
 
His specialties include product development, business strategy consulting, strategic planning, government relations, international business, technology forecasting, scenario development; public speaking, ideation, and public policy. He has been listed in Who’s Who in Science and Technology, Who’s Who in Business and Finance, Who’s Who in the South, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World.
 
Richard earned his B.S. in Business Administration at Thomas Edison State College in 1995 and his M.S. in Science & Technology Studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1998.
