Dr. Greg Baiden

Greg Baiden, Ph.D. is the Chairman and CEO of Penguin Automated Systems Inc. (Penguin ASI) and the President and Founder of MoonRise Inc.

Since 2001, Greg has been leading Penguin ASI, a research and development company that provides mobile robotic technology solutions for numerous industries and creates cutting-edge digital technologies for various industries, such as mining, agriculture, construction, transportation, maritime, security, military, and space. Greg’s expertise is in mining automation systems, embedded AI, intelligent systems including robotic positioning systems for applications in open pit, underground, subsea and space environments, and automation. He holds over 30 patents in these fields and has also received multiple awards and recognitions for his innovative and impactful work, such as being named one of the top ten robotics companies in 2017. Greg is also the President and Founder of MoonRise Inc., a company he launched in 2019 to revolutionize the field of space mining. By applying terrestrial mining knowledge and technology to lunar exploration and extraction, Greg aims to unlock the potential of the moon as a source of water and other valuable resources.

He was involved in the Lunar Mining Concept Development project by Canadian Space Agency and Shackleton Energy between 2015 and 2019 where he created conceptual plans for H2O exploration and the development of an underground base and mine for de-risking water production from the moon.

Greg was Professor of Robotics and Mine Automation and Canadian Research Chair where he researched, developed, and experimented with new computer networking (optical communication) and sub-surface positioning technologies between 2001 and 2014 at Laurentian University. In 2004, Greg joined the Long Now Clock Project as a Contractor where he assisted in developing the underground excavation to house the 10,000 year clock for the Long Now Foundation.

Greg earned his Ph.D. in Mining Engineering from McGill University in 1993 with the thesis A Study of Underground Mine Automation, sponsored by INCO Limited. He earned his Master’s Degree of Science in Mining and Mineral Engineering in 1986, with his work written in the paper Simulated the Mine-Mill Interface. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Mining Engineering in 1984, both from Queen’s University. Between 1978 and 1981, Greg earned a Diploma as a Technician in Civil Engineering Technology from Ryerson University.

Greg was a Member of Inco Limited’s Senior Management Team from between 1986 and 2001, where he was responsible for all corporate mining research. This research involved pioneering telerobotic systems within the company and globally and included the conceptualization and implementation of the world’s first robotic mine prototype at the 175 Ore Body.

Greg was also the President of Automated Mining Systems, a spin-off of Inco Limited, specializing in communications and control systems for future mine production technology.

As an international authority in the field of Robotics and Automation, Greg is a sought-after consultant, lecturer, and speaker on topics including leadership, technology, and their outcomes to society. His involvement in major projects include: leading and conceiving the Mining Automation Project including Inco, Tamrock, Dyno Nobel, and the Canadian government. He also consulted on undersea mining with Nautilus Mining.

Greg was part of the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems international Project as a Canadian representative to establish international R&D in intelligent systems for manufacturing. This was a collaborative effort between Canada, USA, Japan, Australia, EC (Economics and Social Science Services Canada), and EFTA (European Free Trade Association). In 1990, Greg worked with IBM to establish a high bandwidth radio broadband network. This system was installed at Copper Cliff North Mine from the surface headframe throughout the shaft (4000 feet) and out onto several levels (3000, 3200, 3400 and 3600) in the mine. The total coverage was over 10 miles. The tests of the system were voice communication using a connected phone and a wireless (before cell phones), data systems, and fixed and mobile video.

The true test of the system was the teleoperation of a 36 ton LHD (front end loader) on 3400 level from a surface control room. This work on underground mine networking was laid out in Greg’s Ph.D. thesis granted in 1993. Watch First Time Mine Network Test — LHD Teleoperation.

Greg has served on the Board of Directors for Precarn Incorporated, the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation, and the Art Gallery of Sudbury among others. Greg was also a consultant to the Vatican on the impact of robotics and intelligent systems on the future.
