Douglas Mulhall

Douglas Mulhall is Environmental Health Innovator, Cofounder of Elastrin Therapeutics, and Circular Economy Developer with award-winning projects in healthcare innovation, healthy buildings, and disruptive technologies.

Doug was the Chief Author of the first national blueprint for a European Circular Economy. Read the Circular economy action plan.

He advises multinational corporations, startups, and city and national governments on environmental health, develops public health infrastructure, and researches biocompatible medical technologies.

His work on topics like nano-ecology appears in publications including The Dekker Encyclopedia of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and the Springer Encyclopedia of Sustainability, Science and Technology. He contributes to the award-winning Cradle to Cradle Design Protocol®, which is used to design thousands of products. He is coauthor of Materials Passports, launched in Europe in a $10 million EU initiative. The water recycling systems he designed provide safe sanitation for 100,000 survivors of the 2009 Haiti earthquake.

He has been a Research Fellow at Technical University München since 2015 and a Guest Researcher at the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands since 2013. Previously, he was a Senior Researcher at the Rotterdam School of Management at the Erasmus University. Read Role of extracellular membrane vesicles in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including cancer, renal diseases, atherosclerosis, and arthritis.

Since 2017, he has been Senior Consultant at Positive Impact Sarl Luxembourg, advising the Ministry of the Economy of Luxembourg on the Circular Economy. Watch What is the Product Circularity Data Sheet (PCDS)? Read Implementing Circular Economy Principles in Economic Activity Areas in Luxembourg.

In 1992, Doug joined EPEA GmbH as a Senior Consultant. Since then, he has managed projects on developing healthy products and buildings and was also the managing director between 1992 and 1994. He co-creates healthy products that protect people from toxic substances, using an award-winning certification that he co-created and is recognized by the USEPA. In 2006, Doug cofounded Elastrin Therapeutics Inc. and has been an Advisor on its scientific advisory board. Elastrin is a UK and US-based biotech company developing novel therapies to reverse cardiovascular disease. Their team built a proprietary platform that targets and restores degraded elastin by removing the harmful calcification that stiffens arteries.

They are using drug-loaded nanoparticles for the effective treatment of life-threatening diseases. The company developed the first humanized antibody specific for damaged elastic fiber, a core player in lung and vascular disease. The company’s technology has pre-clinically reversed artery hardening. Watch Elastin Could Revolutionize Aneurysm, Cardiovascular & Skin Treatments– Douglas Mulhall.

In 2021, Doug started his Podcast, The Nature of Longevity, where he interviews scientists, inventors, and physicians who aim to restore heart health by treating the stress that’s triggered by our environment. The podcast is named after his best-selling book Discovering The Nature of Longevity.

In his earlier career, between 1990 and 1992, he was the Cofounding CEO of ICTV, the largest and first TV and radio network in Ukraine. He also cofounded The Environmental Institute, the first South American NGO for recycling wastewater.

Between 1993 and 1997, Doug was the Managing Director of the Biomass Nutrient Recycling Project at Hamburger Umweltinstitut. The process purifies wastewater by reducing BOD, nutrients, and coliform. It recovers nutrients for agricultural production by closing nutrients on site instead of transporting them to a landfill or discharging them into natural wastewaters.

The technology uses biomass and related biological processes, such as macrophytes, soil-based plants, sludge, photosynthesis, and composting, to treat wastewater and recover nutrients through naturally occurring resources, such as sunlight and soil.

Researchers at Hamburger Umweltinstitut in 1990 started planning a biomass nutrient recycling project for 600 residents in a neighborhood of Silva Jardim, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The institute, in cooperation with the Brazilian nongovernmental organization O Instituto Ambiental, has constructed, modified, and tested biomass nutrient recycling in tropical zones of Brazil since 1991, including, for example, the city of Petropolis. The research was funded by the European Commission, Henkel chemical company, Bayer do Brazil chemical company, Ciba Geigy Foundation, the City of Petropolis, Silva Jardim, and private donors.

His 2002 best-selling book, Our Molecular Future: How Nanotechnology, Robotics, Genetics, and Artificial Intelligence Will Transform Our World. was one of the first to describe 3D manufacturing and the impacts of disruptive technologies on sustainable development. It was selected for the New Scientist magazine’s ‘must-read’ list and featured on the Discovery Channel’s Modern Marvels. Read Our Molecular Future.

In 2003, Doug published his second book, Has Heart Disease Been Cured? This was followed by The Calcium Bomb: The Nanobacteria Link to Heart Disease & Cancer in 2004. In the book, he writes about how calcification is one of the most widespread harmful conditions that goes along with heart disease, arthritis, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and osteoporosis.

The American Institute of Stress recommends his bestselling book on reversing artery hardening, Discovering the Nature of Longevity: Restoring the Heart and Body by Targeting Hidden Stress. It has a foreword by Columbia University’s Chief of Cardiology and describes how thousands of heart patients have improved when damage to their health from hidden stress was targeted. In 2023, he published a companion publication, The Story of NanobacTX: How a medical maverick restored cardiovascular health.

He trained design teams for award-winning healthy schools and offices in Sweden and the Netherlands and has been a Registered Expert at the International Organization for Standardization since 2021. He is the Co-creator of the Product Circularity Data Sheet digital fingerprint for products, which provides open-source standardized data on the circularity features of products and is being adopted as a method by the International Standards Organization. For more than 23 years, from 1985 to 2008, Doug was a Documentary Filmmaker working for companies or organizations like Greenpeace Film Productions, Longhouse Film Productions, and Sonheuter Film Productions. In the 1980s, he co-directed and co-produced documentary films on social housing and environmental issues. In 2003, he co-narrated a Modern Marvels segment on Our Molecular Future. He also narrated and was featured in the 2008 ARTE documentary “Dangerous Calcium?”

Doug earned his Bachelor’s Degree of Journalism with Honors in Journalism and Urban Development from Carleton University in 1977.
