Al Chalabi, MBA
Al Chalabi, MBA is an entrepreneur and experienced business professional advisor and author who has been based in Asia for over 20 years. He has an impressive track record in a range of industries. Before joining CASP-R in Hong Kong, Al was Chief Financial Officer at LDM Ltd, a luxury retail developer and manager owned by Bernard Arnault. Al has extensive experience in setting up, growing, and managing businesses.
He grew up in the UK and studied Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Southampton where he earned his Bachelor of Engineering in 1991. Al started his professional career in Canada, working as an engineer in process automation systems. After obtaining his MBA, he worked as a management consultant, specialising in technology, strategy and operations, and has been based out of Hong Kong ever since.
Since 2008, Al has been running CASP-R, a firm he founded to provide independent research and advisory services to investors and corporations, with a focus on real estate and technology. He is active in various Hong Kong-based angel investor groups that provide seed funding to Asian-based tech and healthcare companies.
Prior to this, Al was the Regional Director of Operations & Finance for two major real estate service companies. Under this role, he oversaw the functions of finance, human resources, legal, policies & procedures, IT, and administration.
Previously, Al spent much of his career as a management consultant, advising multi-nationals on various aspects of their corporate strategy and operations in the Asia Pacific region. Some of the larger companies worked for include CB Richard Ellis, Trammell Crow Company, EDS, AT&T, Lehman Brothers, Swire Group, Hongkong International Terminals, the Malaysian Government, and CIMB Bank.
Al started his career as a Systems Engineer with ABB in Canada, a diversified industrial conglomerate, working in their industrial process automation group.
He has also coauthored five successful business books published in the UK and sold worldwide – Wake Up! Survive & Prosper in the Coming Economic Turmoil (2006), The Top 10 Investments for the Next 10 Years (2008), which has been updated and released in paperback as The Top 10 Investments to Beat the Crunch (2009), Cracking the Code: Understand and Profit from the Biotech Revolution That Will Transform Our Lives and Generate Fortunes (2012), and Fast Forward: The Technologies and Companies Shaping Our Future (2015).
His latest book Juvenescence: Investing in the Age of Longevity was released at the end of 2017.
Al lives in Hong Kong with his partner Fiona and their two children, Enzo and Margaux. Al has always been health conscious and believes that, allied with current advances in science, the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle can reap significant rewards. In his book Juvenescence: Investing in the Age of Longevity, he presents his personal experience as well as the latest scientific information about diet and lifestyle most conducive to living a long, healthy life.
