Steven Umbrello, MA, MSc

Steven Umbrello, MA, MSc, is an academic by nature, and an educator at heart. He has immersed himself in understanding technological ethics and the philosophy of emerging technologies. Through his current research projects with the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute and the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies, he is contributing to the research and policy initiatives of these fields of study.

Steven currently serves as the Managing Director at the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies and is also an IEET Advisory Board member.

He also serves as a junior associate at the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute where his primary research and authorship is on atomically precise manufacturing (APM) and other nanotechnology.

His research explores the extent and impact that nanotechnology has on the environment, society, as well as the military and surveillance. Particular emphasis is given to potential governing strategies of APM and how this can be applied to other emerging technologies.

He serves as an editorial board member for journals such as Informatica, Between the Species: Journal of Philosophy and Animals, Humanities and Social Science, and International Journal of Technoethics.

Steven studied philosophy of science and technology at the University of Toronto where he earned his Honors Bachelor’s of Art degree in Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and Classical Studies in 2016. Steven earned his Master of Science in Epistemology, Ethics and Mind at The University of Edinburgh in 2018. In the same year, he earned his Master of Arts in Science and Technology Studies at York University. He is currently a doctoral student studying the philosophy of the digital world at the University of Turin, Italy.

He also attended the Brighter Brains Certificate Programs in 2015, where he received his Certificate in Transhumanism and Certificate in Brain Health and Social Policy.
