Dr. Egil Asprem
Egil Asprem, Ph.D.
is a scholar of esotericism, religion, and intellectual history, with a
penchant for philosophy (mostly analytic).
He is currently a
postdoctoral
scholar in the Department of Religious Studies at University of California
Santa Barbara. Previously, he spent the better part of the past
decade in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, as an MA student and later Ph.D.
candidate at the University of Amsterdam’s Centre for History of Hermetic
Philosophy and Related Currents. He also had a short sojourn as Associate
Professor of Religious Studies at the Norwegian University of Science and
Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim in 2013.
His first book,
Arguing with Angels: Enochian Magic and Modern Occulture
was published by SUNY Press in 2012. he is also the co-editor (with Kennet
Granholm) of
Contemporary Esotericism (Equinox, 2013), and author of a
number of academic and popular articles on subjects ranging from the
history of science, to occultism, parapsychology, ritual magic, and
contemporary religiosity.
He’s been on the board of the European Society for the Study of Western
Esotericism (ESSWE) since 2010, currently serving as the society’s
Treasurer and Membership Secretary. Together with Kennet Granholm he runs
the ESSWE-affiliated
Contemporary Esotericism Research Network (ContERN).
