Stanislav Shalunov, M.S.

Stanislav Shalunov is CTO of Open Garden.
 
Open Garden is a San Francisco startup seeking to improve Internet connectivity through wireless mesh networking using hardware and stacks already present in every smartphone and most laptops and tablets.
 
Stanislav is an Internet architect who designed the new congestion control in BitTorrent (uTP/LEDBAT).
 
During 2000–2006, Stanislav was with Internet2, where he chaired the transport working group, led the open source initiative, and did seminal work in evaluating Quality of Service technologies, which proved to be of significant value to a broad coalition, including Internet2, which promoted net neutrality in policy discussions in Washington. His insights were very helpful to the debate, and provided the foundation for Internet2’s arguments made before the Senate Commerce Committee.
 
His contributions to the field of computer security range from vulnerability discovery (e.g., root hole in the default install of most Unix systems) to tools (e.g., the secure temporary directory cleaner, stmpclean) to analysis of TCP resource consumption. His netkill tool can still bring down any web server with the attacker requiring very modest resources, despite having been first published in 2000.
 
Stanislav is an author of RFC 4656 on One-Way Active Measurement Protocol (OWAMP), also RFC 4737 and RFC 3763. Among other contributions to network measurement, he developed a measurement tool called Thrulay, the unique feature of which is the measurement of delays experienced by TCP traffic end-to-end. Thrulay revealed static queue buildup in the Linux TCP stack.
 
He is a mathematician by training and is interested in startups and entrepreneurship.
 
Stanislav earned his M.S. (magna cum laude) in Mathematics and Computer Science at Moscow State University in 1995. He also earned a M.S. in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1997.
