Jeremy Howard
Jeremy Howard
is President & Chief Scientist at
Kaggle and
Faculty at
Singularity University.
Kaggle is an innovative solution for statistical/analytics outsourcing.
They are the leading platform for predictive modeling competitions.
Companies, governments, and researchers present datasets and problems
— the world’s best data scientists then compete to produce the
best
solutions. At the end of a competition, the competition host pays prize
money in exchange for the intellectual property behind the winning
model.
Kaggle has improved the state of the art across a range of fields,
including mapping dark matter and HIV research.
Jeremy previously founded FastMail because he was frustrated with the
poor state of email
services available in the 1990s. He built FastMail into a successful
global business and after about 10 years of growth sold it to Opera
Software, who now use it as the infrastructure behind OperaMail (and
they still maintain the FastMail brand as well).
He also came up with the idea for
Optimal Decisions Group
and worked with his university friend
(and math guru) Bruce Davey to turn it into a business. The idea was to
move insurance pricing from the risk-minimization approach used up until
that time, to a profit-maximization approach (incorporating price
elasticity, competitor prices, multi-period simulations, and so forth).
The idea turned out to work really well in practice, and Optimal
Decisions built a strong presence in the US, UK, and Australia. After
nearly 10 years of constant growth he sold the company to ChoicePoint,
Today the product is sold as “LexisNexis Optimal Decisions Toolkit”.
Jeremy contributes to a number of open source projects, particularly
the
Perl programming language, Cyrus IMAP server, and Postfix SMTP server.
He has been active in the development of the Perl language, as chair of
the Perl6-data working group, and author of numerous RFCs.
