Professor Holger Bech Nielsen
Holger Bech Nielsen, Ph.D.
is a Danish theoretical physicist, professor at the Niels Bohr
at the University of Copenhagen, where he started studying physics in
Holger has made original contributions to theoretical particle physics specifically in the field of string theory. Independently of Nambu and Susskind, he was the first to propose that the Veneziano model was actually a theory of strings and this is why he is considered among the fathers of string theory. He was awarded the highly esteemed Humboldt Prize in 2001 for his scientific research.
Several physics concepts are named after him, e.g. Nielsen-Olesen Vortex and the Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem for representing chiral fermions on the lattice. In the original Dual-Models, which later would be recognized as the origins of String Theory, the Koba-Nielsen variables are also named after him and his collaborator Ziro Koba.
He is known in Denmark for his enthusiastic public lectures on physics, his latest being at University of Southern Denmark in Odense (March 10, 2005), Kulturhuset i Skanderborg (January 26, 2006), at EUCVest in Esbjerg (March 21, 2006), and at Regensen in Copenhagen (April 12, 2006). In July 2008 he lectured for children at the summer camp for the Danish Association of Gifted Children.
In a series of papers published in 2009, he and fellow physicist Masao Ninomiya proposed a radical theory to explain the seemingly improbable series of failures preventing the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) from becoming operational. The collider is intended to be used to find evidence of the hypothetical Higgs boson particle. They suggested that the particle might be so abhorrent to nature that its creation would ripple backward through time and stop the collider before it could create one, in a fashion similar to the time travel Grandfather paradox.
Holger coauthored Test of Effect from Future in Large Hadron Collider; A Proposal, Search for Effect of Influence from Future in Large Hadron Collider, Card game restriction in LHC can only be successful!, Chaos and Scaling in Classical Non-Abelian Gauge Fields, Why do we live in 3+1 dimensions?, Neutrino Mass Matrix Model with many Quantum charges and No SUSY, Chaos, Scaling and Existence of a Continuum Limit in Classical Non-Abelian Lattice Gauge Theory, and Z2 as the Topological Origin of B+L Violation in the Hot Electroweak Theory.
